Dave: Win or lose playoff game — this has been a great season for the Sooners

How the Sooners got here: Sooner Magic against LSU

Once again the Sooner offense did just enough to beat LSU 17-13, and not waste another stellar performance by the defense.

It was looking a little bleak in the fourth quarter with OU down by 3 and only a hand full of minutes left in the game. That’s when Sooner Magic reared its beautiful head, with a little help from a busted coverage by the Tigers.

Next thing we knew Satenga was streaking down field, no one within 20 yards of him, on his way to a 55-yard touchdown reception. The defense did the rest by stopping LSU on fourth down and securing the win.

First home playoff game for the Sooners

With the victory comes Oklahoma’s first playoff birth since 2019, and the first home playoff game in Oklahoma history.

Against a familiar foe, Alabama.

Apparently a 12-team playoff isn’t enough to make sure the committee doesn’t screw everything up and leave out deserving teams, while letting in undeserving teams.

But cash is king and an undeserving three loss Alabama will come to Norman Friday night for a rematch.

As soon as the committee jumped the Tide over Notre Dame after Bama struggled to beat an unranked 6 loss Auburn, and Notre Dame pummeled Stanford by 30 points, the writing was on the wall.

They wanted Alabama in. And even a 3-touchdown loss to Georgia in the SEC title game wasn’t going to stop them.

I’m not saying Alabama can’t beat Oklahoma or it won’t be a good game. The oddsmakers even have them as a slight favorite. I’m just stating the obvious. They don’t deserve to be there. Money played its role and Alabama benefited from it big time.

Keys to the game

Looking at the re-match, we will have to see if the Sooner defense can once again fluster one of the pre-season Heisman favorite quarterbacks into bad decisions and hopefully more turnovers. Georgia sure did in the SEC title game when they took a page from the Oklahoma game plan and got after Simpson all day.

The key to this game is daring Bama to pass as their run offense is mediocre at best.

Put big pressure on Simpson and let him make mistakes.

It of course would help if the offense can finally find a higher gear and get out of the teens on the scoreboard.

The stakes have never been higher for a home game and as such the Worry Meter is spiking at 95%.

However, no matter what happens, the Sooners have exceeded expectations this year and it has been a great season. I think Venables has a solid foundation in place and the future is bright. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
