Dave: Ball control would help against Tennessee

Sooners need to take advantage of Vols’ weaker defense

There is little to no room for error in the SEC this year. And that made itself readily apparent last Saturday when the Sooners dropped their second contest of the season to the Rebels.

After digging themselves a hole in the first half, Oklahoma fought back and took the lead going into the fourth quarter. Then the wheels fell off as they went scoreless the rest of the way.

Inexplicably, Offensive Coordinator Ben Arbuckle went away from the run game that gave them the lead, and the comeback was no more. Even then, the Sooners had a great chance to pull the game out when Isaiah Sategna fielded a punt and had a great return to the Ole Miss 47-yard line, only to fumble the ball and end any realistic hope of a comeback win.

Although this team’s identity is defense, at some point the offense needs to contribute on a consistent basis. Ole Miss dominated the time of possession because the OU offense could not sustain drives.

This of course tired out the Sooner defense and they gave up the most points they had all year.

Until Arbuckle can find a way to control the ball, the defense will continue to be under fire. And as good as the Rebels are on offense, a stronger test awaits this Saturday night when Oklahoma heads back on the road to Knoxville, Tennessee to take on Josh Heupel’s Volunteers.

These teams are pretty evenly matched, but in opposite ways.

Tennessee has the highest ranked offense in the SEC, while Oklahoma is languishing in the last half of the
conference on that side of the ball. But at the same time, the Sooners have the highest ranked defense in the SEC, while Tennessee is at the very bottom in that category.

If Oklahoma has any kind of chance in this game, it will be on the offense to take advantage of the Volunteer’s weak link. They must keep Heupel’s offense off the field. If they can do that, they have a chance to walk out of Rocky Top with a much-needed win.

As every game from here on out is against a ranked opponent, the Worry Meter will most likely be stuck on high the rest of the season. Starting with 88% this week.

The last time the Sooners visited Neyland stadium, Baker and the boys came away with one of the biggest comeback victories in Sooner history.

It would be nice to get out of there with another one. But a comfortable win would work as well. With all that being said…..BOOMER!!!
