Mateer hoping to pick up from pre-injury success
The 2025 Oklahoma Football season ended in disappointment for Sooner fans to the tune of a 34-24 first round playoff loss to Alabama in Norman last December.
What made it sting more was the 17-0 lead Oklahoma built to start the game. However, looking back on the season as a whole, you would have to say it was a very successful campaign and shows the program Brent Venables is building moving in the right direction.
A home college football playoff game is a big accomplishment. And even though we have a monster of a schedule to contend with in 2026, there is reason to believe a bigger jump could be expected this year.
The defense will continue to be the hallmark of Oklahoma football. With David Stone and Taylor Wien manning the line and the Bowen brothers along with Kip Lewis patrolling the second level, this unit could be even better than before.
And don’t forget returning Lou Groza award winner Tate Sandel. Reports from pre-season practices are saying he is hitting from over 60 yards out. A reliable place kicker is a huge weapon.
The question will be with the offense. And all signs are pointing up. At the spring game I saw an emphasis on getting the ball to the tight ends, something that has been sorely lacking recently.
Lloyd Avant looks like a strong addition to a running backs room that already includes returners Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock.
But the biggest difference maker could very well be a fully healed and bulked up John Mateer. Starting last year on Heisman pace until a broken thumb on his throwing hand hindered him throughout the season, Mateer looks to re-establish himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
If the offense can run the ball more efficiently, something they were mediocre at best last year, and Mateer can stay healthy, this team can absolutely challenge for an SEC title and make a deep run in the playoffs.
This all starts with a special Friday night first game against the UTEP Miners in Norman.
The only thing I know about this game is the Sooners are 41-point favorites and UTEP was 2-10 last year. This is a paycheck game for the Miners and a warm-up for OU.
Worry Meter is cold at 5%. Which is the exact opposite of this Friday night. Hydrate kiddos. It’s going to be a scorcher.
