Sooners have to fight lucky Irish officiating too

by

DAVES-LOGO-copy_DSC0043After the Tulsa game I think we can safely say that the Trevor Knight experiment, barring injury or graduation, is over.

I don’t blame the coaching staff for trying.  After Johnny “Hancock” Manziel burst on the scene last year I’m sure many a coaching staff were on the look out for the next mobile waterbug to turn loose on unsuspecting defenses.

However after seeing Knight and Bell in action, it’s hard to believe Knight showed so much more in pre-season as to convince the coaches that he was the one over Bell.  Maybe it’s true some players are great in practice but it just doesn’t click on Saturdays.  And that’s not to say it wouldn’t eventually click for Knight, but after Bell’s performance, I don’t expect Knight back under center unless Bell goes down or in a special package for one or two plays.

So it’s the Belldozer’s show from here on out.  And after just one rehearsal, Blake leads the Sooners against the hated golden domers in South Bend this Saturday afternoon.

I realize Tulsa is a bad team, but over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns is impressive against air.

So it’s the Belldozer’s show from here on out.  And after just one rehearsal, Blake leads the Sooners against the hated golden domers in South Bend this Saturday afternoon.

It sure would have been nice for Bell to have started all three games for OU leading up to Notre Dame.  Because not only are the Sooners on the road in a hostile environment, they are also going up against the so called “luck” of the Irish.

And in this case, the “luck” has more often than not been in the form of questionable officiating.

You see, Notre Dame has been granted special status with college football.  They are catered to by the powers that be more so than any other school.  Just look at the Bowl Championship Series.

If you go to the BCS website you will find a long document that details the selection procedure for the National Title game and all other BCS bowls.  It’s full of all the requirements that a team most have to play in a BCS bowl.  And only one team is specifically named in that document.  One team that apparently is so special, it gets to play by it’s own rules.

Yes right in the middle of that document is one sentence that reads as follows: “Notre Dame will have an automatic berth if it is in the top 8 of the final BCS rankings.”

It’s just ridiculous the calls Notre Dame gets no matter who is officiating and no matter where they are playing.

_DSC0073No winning a league title, no waiting around for an at large bid, no other obscure qualifications that other less worthy schools must meet.   They are quite simply in if they attain a high enough ranking.  A ranking that is biased on name alone.

So you see Notre Dame receives special dispensation from college football.  And that leaks onto the playing field.  Go back and look at their win over Michigan State.  If a Spartan player breathed on an Irish wide receiver officials threw a flag.  It was comical.

We saw it last year on Owen Field.  The bogus holding call that negated Bell’s touchdown before halftime.  The Te’o interception when Saunders was interfered with near the end of the game.

It’s just ridiculous the calls Notre Dame gets no matter who is officiating and no matter where they are playing.

So the worry meter remains at 100% this week.  I honestly believe OU is the better team this year.  But are they good enough to overcome the “luck” of the Irish?  I hope so.  But it’s going to take some Sooner Magic.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!  P.S. RUDY WAS OFFSIDES!  — Dave
