Rattler looks the part…but should we be playing football at all?

I think it’s a mistake to play any sports until the pandemic is over or at least greatly subdued. – Dave

What a long and strange journey it has been to reach the beginning of an abbreviated season of Sooner Football.

The schedule has lost two of the bigger games of the year in Tennessee and Army. And the remaining games are not guaranteed to be played.

Several teams across the country, including in the Big 12, have had to reschedule and even cancel games due to the current pandemic. I was surprised that they went ahead and planned to play any season at all this year.

The Pac 12 and Big 10 had cancelled their fall seasons with an eye toward maybe playing in the spring. (Although the Big 10 has since changed course and is now set to start October 24 th .) I assumed that the rest of the Power 5 would follow. But I guess they decided there was too much money involved.

I think it’s a mistake to play any sports until the pandemic is over or at least greatly subdued. It’s not just the fear of getting COVID 19, it’s that we don’t know what the long term effects might be. Sure an athlete may get COVID and then recover and think everything is fine. But what happens down the line when they discover the enlarged heart it caused, or worse don’t discover it and the athlete dies during a workout? I don’t think it’s worth it.

But that’s just my opinion and we all have them. I myself have passed on my season tickets until next year. I just don’t want to take a chance. As crazy and screwed up as this world of ours is, I would still like to stick around as long as I can.

Anyway, the Big 12 is moving forward with the season and as such the Sooners played their first game at home this year against Bobby “Evil Knievel” Petrino and his Missouri State Bears a few Saturdays ago.

It can really only be called a “game” in the sense that there was another team on the field with OU, and they did keep score. Other than that….I will say that Spencer Rattler certainly looked the part of the next great Sooner quarterback in Lincoln Riley’s offense.

Rattler went 14/17 for 290 yards and 4 TD’s. It should have been 16/17 for about 330 and 6 TD’s. Two passes hit receivers in their hands for sure touchdowns. He was accurate on short, intermediate and long throws. Although much stiffer competition is coming, Rattler is going to be in the thick of the Heisman race. Mark it down. The “Speed D” was just that. Speedy. Again, this is just Missouri State, but they did look fast.

Spencer Rattler and Charles Rambo.

There is a lot to like about that side of the ball this year. Especially when we get Perkins back from suspension. The Sooners were missing 29 players to start the game. Mostly due to COVID, others due to suspension from last year.

But it made no difference. The water boys could have given the Bears a game. They just aren’t on this level. And I’m almost afraid to say it, but this Saturday’s match does not look that much better.

Kansas State comes to town for a rooster kick off after that embarrassing loss to Sun Belt conference power Arkansas State on the Cats home field. If the Sooners can keep the Cats QB run game contained, unlike last year, this shouldn’t be that hard. Arkansas State held him to 7 yards. Surely the Sooners can do the same.

But that’s why they play the game, and every team that comes to Norman does so with a “this is our Super Bowl” mentality.

However the Worry Meter is only at 35% this week. This shouldn’t be that hard…Should it?

With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
