Big bounce back win on the road against South Carolina last Saturday after the Red River debacle. Even bigger was the run game that finally came to play, in what seemingly feels like the first time this year.
Tory Blalock emerged as RB 1 for the Sooners with over a hundred yards and a touchdown against the Gamecocks. Averaging 5 yards a carry is a great game against anyone, much less an SEC defense on the road.
The offensive line had its best performance of the season. And by doing so they took pressure off Mateer, allowing Oklahoma to control the line of scrimmage and Blaylock to work his magic.
I’m sure the Sooners went into this game knowing they had to start running the ball more effectively, as it’s pretty obvious Mateer isn’t 100% no matter what anyone says. They need to keep as much off his shoulders and hand as possible as he continues to fully heal.
The offensive line will have to continue to plough the road ahead as the Sooners face the first of five straight ranked teams when the #8 Ole Miss Rebels come to town in what is shaping up to be a wet Saturday morning.
They have a high scoring offense and sport a 6-1 record coming off a road loss to Georgia in which the Rebels put up 35 points.
That may seem like a lot of points, but that can be a little deceiving as Georgia is not the defensive juggernaut it has been in the last half decade. They are hovering around 28th in the nation in total defense this year. The Sooners are #1 in total defense coming into this game.
Not to say Mississippi won’t score any points of course, but this will be the best defense they have faced by far this year.
Whether Kiffin thinks Brent is cheating or not. Kiffin is a good coach. But he has also been pretty good at shooting off his mouth as well. Makes it easy to dislike him.
The Rebels aren’t 6-1 by luck, so the Worry Meter is again high this week at 80%.
I certainly hope the Sooners shut that guys’ mouth this weekend. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
