Dave: Sooner defense on the right track

by

‘I would be way more worried about the team if we won 56-45…’

I have heard too many people complain about the fact that the game against SMU last Saturday was close until the fourth quarter.

Too many people thinking that SMU was supposed to be a cream puff because they were from a lesser conference, and we were supposed to win by 50 points.

I had a discussion with another fan as the game wore on about what was happening on the field.  He claimed that we didn’t care what the score was.  We were holding back plays and being vanilla because we were saving everything for texas.

I told him that’s fine if it were true, but we need to get this thing won first.  At the time SMU had just scored to pull within three points of the Sooners.

Here is the truth.  SMU is a good team.  They have a roster with former 4-star high school recruits and transfers from the portal.  They have players on both sides of the ball that are going to play in the NFL someday.

Their quarterback was a 4-star recruit who several power five teams went after.   They are going to score a lot of points on a lot of teams this year.

So for me, the game was the first big sign since Venables became head coach that the defense and the team as a whole is on the right track.

Oklahoma has a chance to be conference champs – again

I think this team has a real shot to compete for a Big 12 Title this year.  To hold a quality team like SMU to 11 points, six of which coming on a dubious pass interference call in the endzone, and the subsequent 2-point conversion that should have been offensive pass interference, is a big accomplishment.

The offense did struggle early.  But again, SMU has good players along the defensive line.  And when they really needed it, the offense scored two quick fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

Put it this way, I would be way more worried about the team if we won 56-45 than I am now.  The fact that the offense only scored 28 points is much less concerning than if the defense gave up 45 points.

The Sooners will be looking to improve to 3-0 when they stay in state and travel to Tulsa this weekend to face the Golden Hurricane.  They will see a familiar face in new Tulsa head coach Kevin Wilson.  Wilson and Venables faced each other for years in practice as Wilson was the OU offense coordinator when Venables was the OU defensive coordinator.

Wilson doesn’t have the talent that Venables has, but that won’t stop him from going full throttle with his up-tempo wide-open offense.  The same offense that broke records at OU in the first decade of the 2000’s.

But in the end, the Sooners should be able out-athlete them.  It will probably be close for a while as Tulsa will be pumped up to try and beat the big bad instate Sooners.  But they should wear down in the face of a much deeper and more talented team.

The Worry Meter is at about 40% this week.  Kevin Wilson’s familiarity with Venables system will help Tulsa.  But it goes both ways.

With all the being said…BOOMER!!!
