Dave’s Worry Meter: The competition steps up in week 2 with the Ponies coming to town

Blow out win over Arkie State no barometer of OU’s improvement

The Oklahoma Sooners did whatever they wanted to do against Arkansas State.

Before anyone was even settled into their seats OU was up by 14 points.  And it just avalanched from there.  Offense, defense, and special teams all dominated.  Gabriel looked like a Heisman candidate as did QB 1 of the future freshman Jackson Arnold.  The Defense looked fast and decisive.

But did we learn anything from this performance?

Yes and no.  It seemed obvious that at the very least the Sooners looked more organized and decisive in all phases of that game as compared to last year.  They also looked faster.

Again, Arkansas State was in no way a measuring stick to be able to judge the rest of the year.  But to do what Oklahoma did to them…you can’t help but be impressed.

We will get a much better idea as to the improvement the Sooners have made over the offseason when the original NIL team, the SMU Mustangs, come to town this Saturday night.

SMU offense will be the first test for Sooner D

The Mustangs will test Oklahoma, especially with their offense.  Now in his second year as head coach, Rhett Lashlee has SMU continuing on the success built by Sonny Dykes and remains one of the top offenses in Group of Five football.

They have really good players at the skill positions and a new starting quarterback in former 4 star prospect Preston Stone, who is coming off a 3 touchdown performance against La Tech.

Stone is distributing the ball to a couple of other 4 star players, wide receiver Jordan Hudson (a TCU transfer) and running back L.J. Johnson.

With this trio of playmakers, the SMU offense is humming.  And along the Mustang defensive front, Sooner fans might recognize former Oklahoma transfer Kori Roberson who intercepted a pass and ran it back for a pick six last week.

So the Mustangs aren’t coming to town to collect a paycheck.  They are coming to win the game and show the college football world they are ready to play with the big boys when they join the ACC next year.

I have no doubt OU will be able to score on SMU.  It’s our defense that will once again have to prove that they are truly on the right track.

So the Worry Meter is at 70% this week. We will know a whole lot more about the trajectory OU football is on at about 9pm Saturday night.

If the Sooner defense can hold SMU under 20 points, it’s going to be a good year.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!

Dave
