Witten gets thrown in the fire at Florida
It was going to happen sooner or later.
There was only going to be so many times the defense would keep the team in the game until they eventually had an off night.
And on that off night, they needed the offense to pick them up, instead of the other way around. Unfortunately, the Sooner offense remained missing in action as South Carolina rolled to a 42-25 victory in Norman. And it wasn’t that close.
The halftime score was South Carolina 28 and Oklahoma 10.
More telling would be the 307 total yards of offense the Gamecocks amassed versus the Sooners anemic 71. The only reason it wasn’t 28-3 was an amazing pick six by Kip Lewis. Game was over.
No one in that stadium had any allusions Brent’s boys were going to mount a comeback and win after seeing the offensive ineptness in the first half. Only after South Carolina flooded the field with reserves, did the Sooners score a couple of late touchdowns.
This performance was apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back, at least regarding offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle as he found himself without a job on Monday morning.
Jason Witten was tabbed as the interim offensive coordinator, including play calling duties.
What can we expect from Witten’s play calling?
To me it really doesn’t really matter too much who calls the offense the rest of the season. It’s a lost year.
I would assume there will be a national search for a new OC that has probably already started.
I would be very surprised if Witten stayed in this position for next season. This is his very first year coaching college football. Going from calling plays at a private Christian high school to calling them at an historic blueblood program in the SEC is a pretty prolific progression.
Unless we end up winning out while scoring 40 points a game, I doubt it sticks. This was a name recognition appointment to keep recruits and probably appease some donors.
Witten will be thrown into the fire with a road test in the Swamp this Saturday night against the Florida Gators.
Florida is coming off a shellacking against Georgia in the so called “world’s biggest cocktail party”. They will be looking to right themselves at home against the flailing Sooners.
The Gators are little bit of the mirror opposite of Oklahoma, sporting a strong offense, but a weak defense.
However, having a weak defense against the Sooners has not been a problem for opposing teams this year. That’s why the Worry Meter continues to spike at 95% this week.
The Sooners are playing for pride now. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
