Dave: OU fans getting a taste of the future

Arnold may step in again against tough TCU Horned Frogs

Sooner fans got a taste of the future at quarterback last week against BYU. And this wasn’t during mop
up duty of a blowout. The game was most definitely in the balance.

And I think the future looks bright.

Former 5-star Jackson Arnold used his rocket arm and his fleet feet to close out Oklahoma’s victory after
Dillion Gabriel was unable to play the second half due to an undisclosed injury.

Arnold did miss an open Nic Anderson on a streak route down the sideline but made up for it when he audibled to a slant for Jalil Farooq that got the first down to end the game.

It wasn’t a great performance by the Sooners, in fact it looked pretty dismal for a while as the defense allowed over 200 yards rushing and their top running back to gain over 8 yards a carry.

We did find out that Danny Stutsman had the flu and was on IV’s all the way up to kick off and half time. Just goes to show how important he is in that defensive scheme.

When he is not there or is not a hundred percent, the defense is in trouble. But for all the yards the
defense surrendered, they made up for it with three forced turnovers that essentially won the game.

None bigger than Billy Bowmans 100-yard pick six late in the third quarter. I don’t know what the Cougars
were thinking on that play. That drive started at the BYU 40 and consisted of consecutive runs of 25, 11
and 22 yards to get to the OU 2-yard line.

Then inexplicably they try to throw a slant that Bowman jumped for the interception and turned the momentum of the entire game. That was some Pete Carroll Super Bowl against the Patriots level bonehead stuff.

Honestly, it seems like a play that unfortunately Lebby would call.

But we will take it. And though it was not pretty at all, we will take the win and move on.

It’s been a while since Oklahoma played a Friday after Thanksgiving game, but that is what we have
this week as the TCU Horny Toads come calling in yet another 11am kickoff.

TCU is 5-6 but has come on as of late taking texas to the wire in Austin and demolishing Baylor in Fort Worth. They run the same offense that the Sooners do, so each team’s defense will be familiar with the schemes.

They have a freshman quarterback who has come in for an injured and former Sooner Chandler Morris, and he has been on fire as of late. He threw for over 400 yards with only 5 incompletions against Baylor last week.

They have a big, dangerous tight end who is coming off a 180 yard and 2 touchdown performance as
well.

This one is going to be tough. The Frogs need this win to become bowl eligible. The Sooners are
gunning for a 10-win season and revenge for the loss at the hands of TCU last year when their dirty play
knocked Gabriel out of the game.

Ironically, Gabriel may not be able to play in this contest as well. We will have to see who trots out onto the field Friday for the Sooners at quarterback.

Oklahoma also still has an outside shot at the Big 12 Championship game depending on the outcome of other games this weekend. So, with a lot on the line, the Worry Meter is again at 75% this week. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
