Sooners must stay sharp and focused: on TCU

by

Sooner Magic struck early and won over the Luck of the Irish last Saturday in South Bend exercising some ghosts of the past in the process.

The “Magic” came in the form of back to back interceptions off the Irish resulting in a 14 point lead with only 3 minutes gone in the game. No doubt that was a big factor in the contest, but to me the more exciting part was the play of both our offensive and defensive lines.

The defense harassed Rees all day resulting in the aforementioned interceptions and poor throws throughout the game. He was never comfortable and it showed.

Even more impressive was the offensive line. Going up against two All-Americans, one of which might be the best defensive lineman in college football, Oklahoma rushed for over 200 yards. Against the same team we only got 15 yards against last year, at home.

Time to channel some Bud against Notre Dame Irish

by

Let us put this game in perspective.

Oklahoma has not beaten Notre Dame in my lifetime.

And that is a long time.

Not since 1956, when Coach Bud Wilkinson took Jimmy Harris, Tommy McDonald and the rest of the Sooners to South Bend and whipped Notre Dame 40-0.

That day the Sooner players carried Wilkinson off the field on their shoulders.

But the Fighting Irish have been delivering revenge ever since. Seven Oklahoma losses. The closest the Sooners have come to winning was when Coach Bob Stoops took Josh Heupel, Quentin Griffin and the rest of the Sooners to South Bend and lost 34-30.

My take on the Pride of Oklahoma controversy

Imagine a dozen giant elephants wearing kilts and guzzling from beer steins, all the while singing a gaelic song consisting entirely of two notes pronounced repetitively.

“Oom pah, oom pah, oom pah”. And then repeat for 24 more measures of music.mikesblog

Then imagine this same troop of normally affable musicians of the animal kingdom all pissed off and stampeding.

That’s the Pride of Oklahoma tuba section this week. They boycotted band practice on Monday in protest of Director Justin Stolarik’s unpopular changes to the band.

This is a big deal. The fact the tuba section brought this attention to themselves is a big deal. Usually this group goes about their business without regard to any recognition or notice from the rest of the world.
