The Sooners’ wins and losses in 2025

Consider this year two in the SEC experiment of re-shaping the expectations of Oklahoma football fans. The question is, will this be Brent Venables’ last year as the king lab rat?

There is little doubt the Oklahoma Sooners will be better than last year. That 2024 offensive line, those bandaged wide receivers watching from the sideline, and an inexperienced but heralded quarterback who became afraid of his shadow, torpedoed any chance of success last year. 

A healthy and more experienced O-Line, a wide receiver corps and running back room bolstered by good transfers and a QB (John Mateer) that some have already placed on a Heisman watch list, should change things in 2025. 

But the same murder’s row schedule for Oklahoma means they could lose four football games and still be good – maybe good enough to sneak into a playoff. Maybe.

LSU mauls out of sync Sooners 37-17

A failed trick play that saw a desperate tight end Bauer Sharp throw a sick duck pass turned LSU interception in the third quarter seemed emblematic of Oklahoma’s find-a-way-to-fail offense for 2024, ending the regular season in a 37-17 defeat that brought the Sooners’ first year foray into the SEC to a merciful end.

Just one week from the euphoria of trouncing then No. 7 Alabama, the Sooners never seemed in rhythm on offense and appeared unusually out of place on defense (at least in the secondary).

Now Oklahoma waits to learn what sub-tier bowl game to which they will be assigned. The benefit of this team bowling is the extra practice time that these Sooners need more than any of the previous 25 consecutive teams that have taken a bowl game field.

One big takeaway from this game was that the trouble of the offensive line is not over. The O-line allowed four sacks and 10 tackles for a loss. Rarely in the second half of the game did QB Jackson Arnold have time to get back to the line of scrimmage, much less throw any pass that was meaningful.

Arnold was 14 of 21 for 110 yards. He had 75 yards rushing.

Sooners turn the Tide, dominate in 24-3 win

Relying on the legs of QB Jackson Arnold and true freshman RB Xavier Robinson — and a dominating defense spearheaded by veteran LB Danny Stutsman — Oklahoma soundly defeated No. 7 ranked Alabama 24-3, delivering a most improbable outcome of the Sooners’ final home game of its difficult inaugural SEC season, likely spoiling the Crimson Tide’s playoff hopes and securing OU’s 25-year bowl appearance streak, the second longest in college football.

Before Saturday night’s 6:30 pm kickoff, who would have thought this would happen?

Not many. Except the guys wearing the helmets with interlocking O and U thought so.

They played like it, anyway, throughout 60 minutes of football. It might be hindsight to say this, but Alabama never threatened the Sooners after Oklahoma scored on a 18 yard Robinson run with 36 seconds left in the second quarter.

Arnold completed 9 of 11 passes, but it was his 131 yards on 25 carries that carried the day. The Alabama defense appeared to have no answer for Arnold’s keepers.
