Sooners make statement in 49-14 dominance of Huskers

Nebraska’s opening touchdown drive to take the lead 7-0, was like poking a bear.

And the bear wasn’t happy about it — responding with QB Dillon Gabriel scampering 61-yards for a touchdown and energizing the No. 6 Sooners into scoring the most points Oklahoma has ever scored in 88 meetings with the Huskers, winning 49-14 in Lincoln.

By the time the third quarter was over the Sooners had already put the wraps on this dominating win.

And although the number of points set a new high, it was the Oklahoma defense that caught the eye of viewers watching the nationally televised FOX game.

The Sooners either forced a punt or turnover on downs on 12 of Nebraska’s drives.

The Sooners defense held Nebraska to little more than three yards per play in the first half.

Oklahoma needs to be on its toes in Lincoln and dispel nagging doubts about the offense
That was the most uncomfortable 30 point win I think I have ever seen.

At least for the first half. After Kent St. spent the beginning 29 minutes of the game making OU look like….well…Kent St., the Sooners finally realized that the Golden Flashes weren’t going to roll over.

Down 3-0 with just over a minute left in the second quarter, Dillion Gabriel found Marvin Mims on a few sideline patterns and a nice streak route for a touchdown with just 18 seconds left before intermission. The Sooners then scored on their first drive of the third quarter and the route was on.

What took so long? My guess is that Lebby didn’t want to show his hand before the meat of the schedule begins.

But Kent St. had other ideas and probably forced Oklahoma to turn a few more pages in the play book in the second half, to make sure another top 10 team didn’t fall at home to a supposedly inferior opponent.

Sooners survive 23-16 slugfest with ornery Huskers

A sluggish first half offense from No. 3 Oklahoma and a scrappy third down offense by Nebraska kept the rekindled rivalry that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Game of the Century very close.

But in the end, defense ruled the day.

Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer are no doubt happy. Some things don’t change.

Such as an Oklahoma-Nebraska contest that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
