Sooners’ path ahead is paved with mines

OK, for weeks I have been battling the Internet Gods, my aging computer and my stupidity when it comes to computer e-mailing files.

After decades of no problems, Yahoo Mail and I got into a huge battle over their service and my email woes. I have finally kicked them to the curb and went with Google Chrome. Let’s say I’m hopeful about future emails, just as I am about our surprising Sooner football squad.

In what can only be described as a huge shock, OUr boys in the Crimson and Cream put an old-fashioned butt-whipping on the vaunted Michigan Wolverines by a tally of 24-13.

From this Houston Texas look-out, where I was held in the Gulag without my consent, that was quite a surprise – to me and the entire college football world.

Sooners lift weight off their shoulders with big win over Michigan in national spotlight

That was a big game for the Oklahoma program.  And everyone knew it.

After Mateer took a knee to run out the clock, the players of course celebrated.  But it was a little different than your average non-conference home game win celebration.

I saw a player fall to the ground and make an imaginary snow angel.  I saw a player doing a back flip.  And I saw a player take a knee and look around as if to just take it all in.

The players even lifted Venables on their shoulders for a few moments in the excitement of it all.  Brent said he understood why they did it, but was embarrassed by it, of course because this win was not the goal of the whole season.  But he did understand that it was big.

The players and the coaches knew what everyone was saying outside the walls of their meeting rooms and offices.  They would have to win this game to prove that they are back to what Oklahoma football should be.

Masterful Mateer milks the clock, giving Sooners 24-13 finish over Michigan

by

With 10 minutes left in the game and Oklahoma holding a 21-13 lead, Sooners fans were on edge that previous kicking game miscues might have end up spoiling an otherwise dominating over Michigan performance by quick footed QB John Mateer and a stifling defense.

What was needed was a long drive. One that milked the clock down — perhaps ending in points to put this game away.

What was delivered was exactly that.

It was a masterful drive lead by Mateer, starting on the Oklahoma 19 yard line. Moving the ball 78 yards. And more importantly taking 8:27 off the clock.

Also, it was masterful play calling by offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle (affectionately called Coach ‘Buck by his players), who dialed up a run-based drive — assisted by some ball-control asses from Mateer — in a display of time management we have not seen on Owen Field much since air raid offenses took over the college football landscape in the 1990s.
