Sooners use quick scores, stingy defense for win over Vols
The Sooners defense did not disappoint on Saturday, giving Tennessee QB Justin Worley fits by sacking him five times and returning his errant throw 100 yards for a touchdown, sealing a 34-10 Oklahoma win.
The Volunteers had negative rushing yards late into the third quarter before two big runs brought them into the positive.
On offense, QB Trevor Knight was 20-33 for 308 yards and one touchdown. He surpassed the 300 yard passing mark for the second time in his career. The only interception thrown was a tip drill pick late in the first half. Knight also ran for his second rushing TD of the season.
Oklahoma’s ground game was stymied somewhat by an athletic Tennessee defensive front. But, the Sooners rushed for 146 yards. Freshman RB Samaje Perine led the team with 67 yards and starting RB Keith Ford picked up 56 yards and a touchdown. Ford sustained an ankle injury late in the game and will miss the next two games.
Tennessee loaded the box early to stop the Sooner run game. That dared Knight to pass. WR Sterling Shepard had his second consecutive game of over 100 receiving yards as he picked up 109. WR Durron Neal and TE Blake Bell also had good games at receiver. Even Ford got into the reception act, with one of his catches for a a touchdown.
