OU vs Texas Tech: There is more to Lubbock than just football and tortillas

by

The recent folklore in Lubbock is that Texas Tech students’ tradition of throwing tortillas onto the field originated after a TV broadcaster once said the only thing in Lubbock, Texas was the Tech football team and a tortilla factory.

I’m hear to say that’s bullcrap. There is also a feed lot.

Fortunately the Tech students did not create a tradition of throwing bovine excrement at opposing fans or players. But, there is still time. And considering that Bleacher Report once, appropriately, named the Red Raiders the 8th Rudest Fanbase in College Football, I would not be surprised.

I’ve seen the tortilla throwing in person. Frankly, it’s not as scary as a trip to Boulder, Colorado back in the 90s where the student section smuggled into the stadium rolls of toilet paper that they would soak in water in the stadium bathrooms, then wait a while (allowing the Mile High air to place a nice icy film on the item) and then heave the tissue bomb from the student section onto the field.

Fortunately, the Buffs were so bad back then their students were throwing these at their own players, not the visitors.

Sooners need to score early to take fans out of game (and watch for tortillas)

The victory over Kansas State was one of the most nerve wracking games I have been to recently. We could never really put the game away until the late fourth quarter. So even though the final score did not look it, to me that was a close win.

But that’s all that matters. Now the OU roadshow travels to Lubbock this Saturday to take on pretty boy Kingsbury and his Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Same story this year for Tech. Really good offense, abysmal defense. Although West Virginia was able to virtually stop the Red Raider offense this past Saturday when they only allowed them to score 17 points in a blowout Mountaineer win on Tech’s home field. I hope Mike Stoops is watching that film to try and pick up anything new West Virginia might have thrown at Tech to shut them down.

If the OU defense can hold Tech to anywhere near 17 points, OU will run them out of the stadium.

The Red Raider defense has no hope against Baker and the boys. Even without Samaje, I would be shocked if the Sooners don’t score at least 40 points on those guys. But as we all know, crazy things happen in Lubbock. It’s a night game so the fans will have had all day to get liquored up which will only add to the hostilities.
