Dave: A Sooner win for the ages

by

One quarterback made two crucial mistakes in the fourth quarter to lose the game.  The other quarterback made two crucial throws in the fourth quarter to win the game.

Before kickoff, which quarterback would you have guessed was which?  I would venture to say most, if not all fans would tell you Mateer made the mistakes and Manning made the throws.

Welcome to the Red River Rivalry.  At this point it sounds cliché to say throw out the records and point spreads, anything can happen. But sometimes that is truly the case.

No one I saw in the media or elsewhere picked the Sooners to win this game.

But Oklahoma came in with a plan.  Very conservative on offense and let the defense roll.

It paid off.  Oklahoma played error free and let texas make the mistakes.  Two turnovers for the longhorns and zero for the Sooners, along with a blocked punt recovered for an Oklahoma touchdown and there’s your ballgame.

It was one for the ages that OU fans will remember for years to come.

Sooners survive Lobos 14-6, poor offensive show

You knew when the OU twirler dropped her baton and then an errant firework scorched the turf during the pregame run on that things weren’t going to go well for the Sooners the rest of the evening.

Omens aside, the events during Oklahoma’s narrow 14-6 game which it didn’t win as much as it survived, and the post-game remarks about it, made for a disappointing and perhaps foreboding turn in the Sooners’ 2026 season.

Oklahoma’s fans turned on their quarterback, launching the first boos of the still fledgling season when QB John Mateer inexplicably completed his first pass to the wrong team — an interception to begin his first action since throwing a game-losing INT in Ann Arbor a week before.

Later in the second quarter the fans turned on offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, especially when he chose to run the ball in the waning minutes of the half to set up a field goal (that would miss), rather than have Mateer pass the ball for a hoped for touchdown.

This overshadowed a stellar performance by Oklahoma’s defense, making six sacks and 10 tackles for a loss. Their fourth down stop at the end of the game sealed a win.

The night vs day imbalance between Oklahoma’s offense and defense is a mirror image of a Lincoln Riley team — but in Riley’s case, the Sooners’ offense was so potent it didn’t matter as much.

Sooners end stellar season with 34-24 loss to ‘Bama in college football playoff

Alabama overcame a 17-point deficit late in the second quarter to shift momentum from an Oklahoma team that appeared on a verge of a blow out. The Crimson Tide then never let go, spoiling the Sooners’ first college football playoff game ever played in Norman, 34-24.

It was a mirror of the regular season game between the two blue blood programs played in Tuscaloosa on November 15, when Oklahoma capitalized on three Crimson Tide turnovers to win 23-21

But this time it was Oklahoma’s miscues that allowed Alabama to tie the game up right before the half, going on a 27-point unanswered run by the third quarter’s end, and fending off a fourth quarter surge by the Sooners.

“When we needed to, we couldn’t pull one out like we have several other games this year,” Coach Brent Venables said in his post-game press conference.

Oklahoma scored on three of its first four possessions. QB John Mateer’s athletic ability shined in an 8-yard touchdown run. Tate Sandell scored on a 51-yard field goal. Then Mateer connected with Isaiah Sategna for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter — giving the Sooners a 17-0 lead.
