But ‘work in progress’ offense faces another hurdle with Wildcats
One quarterback made two crucial mistakes in the fourth quarter to lose the game. The other quarterback made two crucial throws in the fourth quarter to win the game.
Before kickoff, which quarterback would you have guessed was which? I would venture to say most, if not all fans would tell you Mateer made the mistakes and Manning made the throws.
Welcome to the Red River Rivalry. At this point it sounds cliché to say throw out the records and point spreads, anything can happen. But sometimes that is truly the case.
No one I saw in the media or elsewhere picked the Sooners to win this game.
But Oklahoma came in with a plan. Very conservative on offense and let the defense roll.
It paid off. Oklahoma played error free and let texas make the mistakes. Two turnovers for the longhorns and zero for the Sooners, along with a blocked punt recovered for an Oklahoma touchdown and there’s your ballgame.
It was one for the ages that OU fans will remember for years to come.
But as they say there is no rest for the wicked. Before the season started the schedule was widely acknowledged as one of the hardest in the country. But one of the games most people marked down as a win was Kentucky in Norman.
That now seems to no longer be the case. The Wildcats are 5-1 and coming off their own upset beating LSU in overtime last Saturday.
New head coach Will Stein and transfer quarterback senior Kenny Minchey have Kentucky clearly in the national conversation.
I believe Minchey is a much better quarterback than Manning. And even though the Sooners just beat the #1 team in the nation, it doesn’t mean all their problems are solved. They only gained 238 yards in total offense and converted just 2 of 13 third downs which is not going to get it done in the long run.
So, the offense is and most likely will continue to be a work in progress.
As such the Worry Meter continues to soar at 75% this week. The schedule will not give the Sooners a breather from here on out. But if they can hold onto the ball and avoid putting the defense in bad situations, they will be in every game they play.
With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
