David Wright was the first former OU athlete turned soldier to die for his country in war in the Middle East.

Exactly four years to the day after his tragic death on a booby trapped road in Afghanistan. Wright’s parents were on the sideline of the Oklahoma-Tulsa game getting a standing ovation from more than 85,000 teary-eyed football fans, whose afternoon of football fun stopped for moment — a sobering moment — that put sports in perspective.

Wright, a former Sooner track athlete, was honored for being a hero. The impact this 26-year-old left his family, teammates and fellow soldiers, has inspired the creation of the Dwight T. Wright II Memorial Scholarship Fund.
