Receiver corps strength of the offense

by

Some random thoughts about the Sooner receiving corps after watching the Spring Red-White Scrimmage in Norman:

Freshman wide receiverTrey Metoyer is the real deal. There are just some guys who look the part and that was evident with this freshman the first time he caught the ball (a 15-yard reception) in the spring Red-White scrimmage.

He’s already been compared to Dez Bryant. Despite the fact it causes some indigestion to compare a Sooner with a Cowboy, one can only hope this proves even partially true.

As for others, Kenny Stills may be trying too hard to make big plays. He dropped a sure touchdown. You have to wonder whether he’s still in a wide receiver slump that began sometime after the Texas game last year.

At the end of the 2012 season we may reflect on Jaz Reynolds being the mainstay of the Sooner receiver corps. On Saturday he had play of the day, capped by a slam dunk over the north end zone crossbars (he got flagged for excessive celebration, leading to a missed extra point, but Jaz promises not to do that in actual games).

Reynolds was able to use his size and speed against defender Javon Harris to make the catch from backup QB Blake Bell, who had been flushed from the pocket before heaving the ball downfield, and scamper into the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown.

Those talents of Reynolds may make him the go-to guy for starting QB Landry Jones.

In the end (we couldn’t resist a Stoopism), this Oklahoma receiver corps will take second behind none in the country this season.
