Dave: Sooners need a full four quarters of football

by

Oklahoma seems to be having a hard time stringing four quarters of solid football together lately.

Whether it’s offense, defense or coaching, they just can’t seem to get it all together for an entire game.

In the first half against texas the offense sputtered while the defense held the shorthorns in check. Against K-State, the defense couldn’t stop a pop warner team and the offense took a nap in the middle quarters waiting until the fourth to wake up, and by then it was too late.

And just last Saturday the offense, defense and Riley himself decided to catch a late dinner after halftime, but someone forgot to let Iowa State in on the new itinerary.

What’s it going to take to get this team to focus and compete at a high level for a full sixty minutes?

Could it be? Maybe this team has OVER achieved? — Dave

Maybe they just aren’t capable of it. We have to remember that this is an offense with four new offensive linemen and a defense with a new coordinator and scheme. And Riley is working with a new quarterback who has been on campus for less than a year.

It’s not like Hurts has been studying the offense for a few years behind Heisman Trophy winners waiting for his shot.

Maybe this team has OVER achieved.

Going into the season I thought this might a rebuilding year. Young offensive line, new defensive coaches. A good quarterback to be sure, but really a stopgap for the hotshot Five-Star recruit to learn Lincoln’s system for a year without being thrown in the fire as a true freshman. There was bound to be a fall off.

The 2021 season would really be our year. The hotshot Five-Star quarterback in his second year, veteran offensive line. New defensive scheme securely in place.

But as Oklahoma fans, that’s hard to accept. We don’t rebuild, we reload.

All that aside though, the team is still 8-1. Another Big 12 Title is there for the taking. That wouldn’t be too shabby for a team that is reloading.

And if the cards fall right, the final four is still not out of the question. But like Hurts said, we have to just concentrate on being 1-0 this week.

That brings us to the Baylor Bears in Waco Saturday night with Game Day in attendance no less.

I really don’t think Baylor is that good. I would say that they are probably the most average 9-0 team I’ve ever seen.

Which might tell you more about the Big 12 this year then it does about Baylor. The Bears got lucky and caught most of the “good” Big 12 teams early before they found themselves.

Iowa St, Okie St, Texas Tech and Kansas St all lost to Baylor early.

Play those games again and I think Baylor has two losses.

But Oklahoma will probably have to play it’s best game of the year to win, because again, Oklahoma just isn’t as good as they have been in recent years.

Or, at the very least they haven’t shown to be that good as of yet. And it’s getting late. So that puts the Worry Meter at 90% this week.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
