5-0 Sooners take on Iowa State Cyclones

by

Sixth-ranked and undefeated Oklahoma has two first place votes in this week’s AP Poll, has a win over Texas under its belt and no one is worried anymore about Landry Jones playing on the road.

Even usually acerbic Skip Bayless suggested that Oklahoma may be the best team in the country, especially since the Florida State team it whipped earlier in the year embarrassed Miami over the weekend.

Unofficial projections put the Sooners as No.3 in the BCS rankings when they come out on Sunday.

That’s the state of the 5-0 Sooners as they delve further into conference play on Saturday when an unpredictable Iowa State Cyclones (3-3, 1-1) come to Norman for a 6 pm kickoff. The game will be televised nationally on FSN.

Oklahoma has gone 5-0 under Coach Stoops on six other occasions. It’s usually really good news, since five of those times the Sooners played for the Big 12 championship and four of those times for the national championship.

Hard runnin’ Murray leads 28-20 win

DeMarco Murray says he doesn’t remember anything about his Red River Rivalry past. On Saturday, he played like it.

A senior playing for a fourth time against archrival Texas, Murray rushed for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 25 carries and helped No. 8 Oklahoma hold off the No. 21 Longhorns, 28-20.

“I see what I see from DeMarco a lot, and that’s good, hard, physical running,” said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. “He pounded the ball today, ran physical, took care of it. I never saw the ball bobble. He caught the ball well. He did everything you want him to do.”

For Murray, it’s probably a good thing the past two games against Texas have been erased from his memory. The gap between them and his production on Saturday is extraordinary.

Sooners escape Ground Force Academy, 27-24

There was some stomach churning in the stands during the waning minutes of this game.

Although fans were on edge, it was DeMarco Murray who sealed this win, running the ball for key yardage to eat up the clock and secure a 27-24 win over feisty Air Force at Owen Field on Saturday.

Murray had another stellar day, gaining 148 yards and scoring three touchdowns.

Murray ran for a 5-yard touchdown and scored on a 17-yard screen pass in the third quarter as the Sooners (3-0) reeled off 17 straight points to pull away after Air Force (2-1) had tied it early in the second half.

That ended up being just enough to stave off the Falcons’ comeback bid.

Jared Tew and Kyle Halderman had rushing TDs in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to three, but Oklahoma was able to pick up two first downs and run out the final 3:39.
