Win shows everyone what makes a ‘Sooner’

Somewhere on our walk from a dusty parking lot to the aged girders of Doak Campbell stadium a young Florida State coed asked me, “Just what is a Sooner, anyway?”

In the ideal world I would have said, “That’s who’s going to win this game tonight.”

Unfortunately, that’s the sort of witty response you think about five hours later.

Like on the walk back through that pack of Florida State students AFTER the No. 1 Sooners beat the No. 5 Seminoles 23-13 here in Tallahassee on Saturday night.

Stoops ‘all in’ on possible conference change

My grandpa once told me that, other than death, the only thing certain to ever happen is change.

So, it was interesting to see the big headline from the Bob Stoops press conference last week to be:

“Stoops says Sooners don’t need Longhorns”

The actual question asked of Stoops was:

“Could you see Oklahoma in the Pac 12 without Texas?”

His answer was, “Oh, sure. Why not? I’m not lobbying for anything. I stick to whatever President Boren and Joe Castiglione feels is best for the university. I’m all in.”

Look for Sooner Schooner to ride westward

United Airlines began direct service between Oklahoma City and San Francisco this week. When United announced this plan months ago, they said it was to provide a link between growing activities at the University of Oklahoma and similar activities in the Bay Area.

They were talking about the bio-science research at the OU Health Sciences Center and its connections with researchers in California.

Or so we thought at the time.

This week, two days after the first non-stop flight left OKC for SFO, OU President David Boren made public statements from which we can extrapolate that ties between the OU athletic department and similar activities on the Pacific Rim may be in the offing.
