Defensive miscues lead reasons for 41-38 loss

by

Daylight on Sunday morning did not illuminate the reasons why the Sooners laid an egg following Saturday night’s rain storm.

But, we certainly know how Texas Tech embarrassed Oklahoma 41-38 to end the Sooners’ school record 39-game home winning streak.

Ryan Broyles fumbled. Jaz Reynolds, James Hannah and Brennan Clay dropped passes. Landry Jones threw behind receivers. The offensive line allowed Tech rushers to keep Jones running for his life.

All that, sure. It was of course a team “effort”. But the worst defensive performance at home since John Blake’s 51-7 loss to Texas A&M in 1997 was the overpowering “how” in this game.

The Oklahoma defense gave up 41 points and killed the Sooners chances of getting their 8th national championship.

Texas Tech is coming to Norman Saturday so it’s time to jump around again.

I don’t see any problem with the Sooners winning this game by double digits. This is not Mike Leach’s Tech team.

And even when Leach came to Norman with his best teams they got their butt handed to them.

OU is coming off the ugliest 30 point win I’ve ever seen.

Stoops and the Sooners won’t admit it, but I am sure they are disappointed with the way they played and will want to take out some frustration on the Red Raiders.

Don’t buy into the whole Tech is only 12 points away from being undefeated thing. They beat Nevada by 1 point and lost to A&M and K-State, all three games on their home field in Lubbock.

Oklahoma’s dominant defense shut out Kansas in the second half.

Oklahoma’s offense gained 609 yards on offensive yards.

But the Sooners D gave up a big play early, and the O scored touchdowns on just four of nine trips to the red zone, leaving Oklahoma fans thinking that their 47-17 win in Lawrence, Kansas was, well, rather ugly.

Better news: Sooner great Ryan Broyles’ pass catching made him the new NCAA career reception record holder.

The red zone trouble was particularly nagging, as the Sooners seemed to move the ball at will, until getting within 20 yards of the goal line.

Then, a Kansas defense that was ranked last in all of college football, put the skids on the Sooner machine.
