Bad Bedlam loss may define QB Landry Jones

by

The 2011 Bedlam game may well define the career of Landry Jones.

First, a disclaimer: Landry Jones is a fine young man and the Sooners have been fortunate to have him.

He will get a shot to play in the NFL and may well have a good career there. I would like to know him personally and would welcome him into my home or business. He’s a good guy.

But, Jones will always carry the label of unfulfilled promise as an Oklahoma quarterback.

It was Jones’ two fumbles that turned the Bedlam game and squelched the chance the Sooners had of standing in the way of Oklahoma State’s first Big 12 conference championship and first outright any-conference championship since grandpa bought his first Edsel (actually, since they won the three-team 1948 Missouri Valley Conference).

Sooners stuff Cyclones 26-6 in blustery Norman

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph didn’t help offenses much, but No. 9 Oklahoma managed to get enough points to fend of a less productive Iowa State offense.

The Sooners’ 26-6 win over the Cyclones sets up a Bedlam showdown for the Big 12 championship next week in Stillwater.

Landry Jones threw for 256 yards, Blake Bell punched in two short touchdown runs and the Sooners limited Iowa State to a season-low 245 yards in a 26-6 victory on Saturday.

Rebounding after allowing a school-record 616 yards allowed last week in a 45-38 loss at Baylor, Oklahoma only let the Cyclones (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) score after James Winchester’s snap sailed over the head of punter Tress Way in the first quarter.

Oklahoma will visit Oklahoma State (No. 4 BCS, No. 5 AP) — with the nation’s second-highest scoring offense — next week with the winner earning the Big 12 title.

Baylor gamed hinges on Broyles-less offense

by

Sitting in the stands at the A&M game I received a text from my brother. He sits on the first row behind the OU bench. He wrote that the doctors were talking to Broyles and then Broyles started to cry.

You know the rest of the story. I feel terrible for Ryan. What a heartbreaking way to end your career at OU.

But injuries are part of the game and unfortunately this year has not been kind to the Sooners in that respect.

If Whaley going down was a concern, Ryan going down is darn near close to a panic.

Leadership, work ethic, and most important consistency was lost when Broyles hit the turf that day.

How many times has Ryan converted the big third down to keep a drive going? Too many to count. And now he won’t be there.
