It’s time for Sooner leader to emerge

by

Two things come to mind going into Saturday’s OU-Kansas State game:

1) This is a game where leadership needs to emerge; and 2) this is a game where fan support needs to go nuts.

A combination of those two should bring a big fat win for the No. 5 Sooners and propel them nicely into the conference schedule and the national championship discussion.

In the past Oklahoma has stepped up when needed on both fronts.

Remember the 2008 Texas Tech game? That was the last time Coach Bob Stoops called out the fans to go crazy at Owen Field. And they did – to the tune of “Jump Around.”

And the team, then also ranked No. 5, showed up to put a 65-21 trouncing on the then No. 2 ranked Red Raiders.

Sooners have more rushing weapons this year

by

First memory of last year’s clash against the K-State Wildcats is probably the injury to RB Dominque Whaley — an event that neutered the Sooners running game and likely lead to the two losses sustained later in the 2011 season.

Maybe not remembered so much is how QB Landry Jones stepped up to pass for 505 yards and five TDs, as the Sooners handly beat Kansas State 58-17 in Manhattan. Ryan Broyles caught 14 passes for 171 yards and a TD.

Whaley is back. And, JUCO transfer Damien Williams has shined as the Big 12 newcomer of the year, so far.

That bodes well for No. 5 Oklahoma, as it means less pressure will be on Jones and the newcomer corps of wide receivers to match last year’s effort to beat the No. 15 Wildcats on Saturday night in Norman.

Jones’ improvement kept Sooners from losing

by

At last year’s end I suggested Landry Jones should go pro because he couldn’t improve any more at the college level.

I was wrong. Had Jones not improved his mobility and ability to handle the pass rush during the off season the Sooners would have lost late Saturday night/Sunday morning in El Paso. Instead the Sooners won 24-7.

A good example of Jones’ improvement was the 68-yard pass play to Kenny Stills that got the Sooners on the board in the first half.

The O-line, which is obviously impacted by the loss of Ben Habern and Tyler Evans even more than we had thought, let a tenacious Miners pass rush chase Jones out of the pocket.

Jones actually got flushed, instead of crushed, drifting to his left and looking to his right.

Jones saw Kenny Stills near the opposite sideline.
