OU-Texas recap: Millard is one cool cat

by

Shortly after midnight on Friday night my Twitter feed caused me considerable concern.

There was Trey Millard “tweeting” about his beloved St. Louis Cardinals winning their way into the NLCS. This was less than six hours from daybreak in Dallas – where the Sooners were about to play against the evil ‘horns of Texas.

Panic ensued.

What was Millard doing? He should be sleeping, I thought.

This does not bode well. Should I call the downtown Omni where the team was staying and alert the coaching staff to rush up to Millard’s room to put a stop to this?

It’s one thing for a middle-aged fan like me to be up late watching TV, fall asleep for a few hours and stumble around in the morning to drag myself to the Cotton Bowl in time for the 11 a.m. kickoff.

Oklahoma-Texas: The game that’s meant to be

by

In reality, the Red River Rivalry has not been a series of games. It is one game.

Each contest is a continuation of the year before — another engagement in a border war that has been waged for 107 years.

A run here. A pass there. A big play. A turnover. A kick.

They are jabs and cuts and headbutts in a slugfest to gain the momentum. To battle for the lead.

To go at it with reckless abandon for 60 minutes in order to gain the lead on the scoreboard, followed by a 364-day time out, then followed by another four quarters of the same struggle.

And it is the way it should be — the best rivalry in college football.

Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione best summed up the state of the Oklahoma-Texas game.

This loss falls squarely upon QB Landry Jones

by

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to analyze why Oklahoma lost on Saturday night to Kansas State, 24-19.

Landry Jones’ fumble became a Kansas State touchdown. A Landry Jones interception late in the third quarter – a pop-fly lob thrown off his back foot into the hands of a Kansas State safety playing center field — led to another KSU touchdown.

“I played pretty terrible. the majority of this game is in my hands,” Landry Jones said.

“I didn’t take care of the ball . . . this one is on me.”

When the sports writer pundits re-hash this game, it will become fashionable to point out mistakes elsewhere on the team.

Certainly the defense, after holding the Wildcat offense to no points for three-fourths of the game, caved to a strong K-State run game in the 4th quarter.
