Landry Jones leads Sooner comeback

by

Landry Jones redeemed himself last night.

About the time his legacy had been etched as the QB who failed in clutch moments, Jones stepped up and lead the Sooners to a comeback 50-49 shoot out win against a West Virginia team led by a super human wide receiver turned running back.

Mountaineer Tavon Austin, who doubled at tailgate – a brilliant move by Dana Holgersen to capitalize on OU’s defensive strategy (more on that below) – rushed for 344 yards and totaled 572 all-purpose yards (just six short of the NCAA record).

He kept the Mountaineers in the game. Even gave them the lead near the end and all the momentum.

But, on two drives in the final three minutes of the game, Jones passed 10 times. He completed nine of them for 134 yards and two touchdowns – the last one a fourth down to Kenny Stills (10 catches for 91 yards) for the game-winning touchdown with just 24 seconds left in the game.

Sooners’ win keeps BCS bowl hope alive

by

The Sooners managed to fend of Baylor’s high-powered offense in a stiff high-powered wind that struck Owen Field Saturday.

Oklahoma’s 42-34 win over Baylor keeps the Sooners’ chance for landing a BCS bowl berth in the post-season very much alive.

The win came either because or despite a defensive strategy of coordinator Mike Stoops to take away the Bears’ passing game and allow the team from Waco to rely upon their ground game.

Bears’ rushing of Baylor quarterback Nick Florence and running back Lache Seastrunk — against an OU defensive front that sometimes had no linebackers, but seven defensive backs — was effective, but not enough to outscore 14th-ranked Oklahoma.

The Sooners offense began the day with some question marks OU was without All-American center Gabe Ikard due to a concussion and started true freshman Ty Darlington in his place.

Clay shines, Sooners win 35-20 over ISU

by

It was the Brennan Clay show. No, the Justin Brown show. No, the Kenny Stills show. No, the Tony Jefferson show.

No matter who gets the credit, the Sooners got back on the winning track, outplaying the always fiesty Iowa State Cyclones 35-20 in Ames.

Oklahoma has never lost to Iowa State in eight games under Coach Bob Stoops. Stoops tied Bud Wilkinson’s win record and is now 12 wins away from Barry Switzer’s 157-win mark.

QB Landry Jones overcame two first-half interceptions, finishing 32 of 45 for a season high of 405 yards and four touchdowns.

As Stoops said after the game, the play of Clay was huge. The Sooners worked hard to establish the run game, and thanks to Clay’s 24 carries and 157 yards, they did just that, wearing the Cyclones defense down with a total 85 offensive plays.
