Dave: Expect speed race with Kent State

by

All in all it was a pretty successful debut for new Sooner head coach Brent Venables last Saturday.

They took care of UTEP in convincing if not spectacular fashion.

The offense was balanced and fast. Boy were they fast. Maybe too fast? The time of possession could be a little concerning.

The Sooners possessed the ball just 21 minutes and 27 seconds versus UTEP who held the ball 38 minutes and 33 seconds.

Of course it didn’t matter because Oklahoma was up 21-0 in the first quarter, averaging just over one minute and 10 seconds for each of those three touchdowns.

The Miners tried to control the ball, but could not convert those possessions into touchdowns. The OU defense was able to shut down UTEP outside of two 50 yard field goals and one touchdown by playing an effective zone the majority of the game.

LSU Coach Brian Kelly and his Tigers. Sure, they almost pulled out a win thanks to the bone-headed pitch sweep play Florida State Coach Mike Norvell called at the end of their game in New Orleans. But, they didn’t. The Tigers look lost in the swamp. And then this week Kelly does this?

Kent State gave the Washington Huskies all they wanted last week. And this week the Flashers are spending it in Tulsa, checking out the Greenwood historical neighborhood and practicing at Tulsa Union instead of flying back to Ohio only to turn around and come to Oklahoma for Saturday’s game in Norman. (Curious how a scrimmage with Tulsa Union might turn out).

We like Marty & McGee on the SEC Network (as we get geared up for the conference leap), but doing a feature on award-winning mullets was too much last weekend. No. Just no.

Thank the Lord above for Brent Venables and the masters of the football world he has assembled around him.

Saturday on Owen Field was a welcome homecoming – for Sooner Fans salivating for a new era of OU football, for the mighty Brent V. – who already has secured for himself a place in the annals of Big Red gridiron history – and for all players, and the fans, many of whom still may harbor a wish that Lincoln Riley’s house in Beverly Hills someday burns down without anyone being injured.

There’s surely a lot of hard football games ahead this season for our beloved Crimson and Cream warriors….but, as the saying goes, “the sky’s the limit!”

The kickoff of the 2022 season was steady, dynamic and driven; filled with exciting plays on both sides of the ball.

Rattler? Williams? Forgotten.

Marshal Dillon Gabriel was just what the football doctor ordered for the Sooners for the next few years – a steady, talented, capable, quarterback, who led his team down the field, raising the entire team with his confidence and success.

Our running backs…looked solid, instead of the offensive game plan after-thought they were under Riley.
