4th quarter fumble takes air out of Boomer Sooner balloon, OU falls to Ol’ Miss 34-26

by

With 7:11 left in the game, Isaiah Sategna began his punt return — riding the momentum that a revived offense and a stingy defense had presented after the halftime intermission, which saw the Sooners outscoring eighth-ranked Mississippi 16-3 in the third quarter.

The Sooners were behind 31-26, but despite a sloppy offensive performance most of the game, Sategna’s punt return presented the best opportunity for good field position when the Sooners needed it most.

Four seconds later, as his speedy wheels took him to the 50 yard line — a perfect place to launch the Sooners to a comeback winning drive — Sategna instead launched himself, hurdling an Ol’ Miss defender.

And on his way down, in that next second, at 7:04 on the clock, he fumbled.

The hope-filled balloon of those previous six seconds, the ones that carried a chance to take an Oklahoma lead late in the game and, if held, a win that would solidify the Sooners’ play off chances, burst.

O-line has best game of year, needed even more against Ol’ Miss

Big bounce back win on the road against South Carolina last Saturday after the Red River debacle.  Even bigger was the run game that finally came to play, in what seemingly feels like the first time this year.

Tory Blalock emerged as RB 1 for the Sooners with over a hundred yards and a touchdown against the Gamecocks.  Averaging 5 yards a carry is a great game against anyone, much less an SEC defense on the road.

The offensive line had its best performance of the season.  And by doing so they took pressure off Mateer, allowing Oklahoma to control the line of scrimmage and Blaylock to work his magic.

I’m sure the Sooners went into this game knowing they had to start running the ball more effectively, as it’s pretty obvious Mateer isn’t 100% no matter what anyone says.  They need to keep as much off his shoulders and hand as possible as he continues to fully heal.

Sooners rush to 26-7 win over Gamecocks

by

In its first true SEC road game of the season Oklahoma finally found its rushing game, led by RB Tory Blaylock, who started the Sooners off with an 18-yard touchdown run to end a 75-yard opening drive.

The Sooners never looked back. With a dominant defense that had Gamecocks QB LaNorris Sanders scrambling all day, Oklahoma went on to a 26-7 win in its first ever appearance in the state of South Carolina.

Blaylock finished the day with 101 yards on 19 carries. Xavier Robinson had 58 yards on 11 carries.

It was an important win for Oklahoma, coming off the previous week’s disappointing loss to Texas (where they managed just 48 yards rushing) and a week before a strong Mississippi team comes to Norman. The Sooners are now 6-1, with a 2-1 SEC record.

“I saw a hungry and angry football team…they were hangry,” Coach Brent Venables in his post-game interview.
