Forget last year’s ‘what ifs’ – it’s football time in Oklahoma (but questions remain)

During the off season I heard many people play the “if only” game when talking about the 2014 Sooner football campaign.

If only Trevor wouldn’t have thrown the pick six’s against Kansas St. and TCU. If only Stoops wouldn’t have re-punted against the pokies. If only Hunnicutt wouldn’t have missed an extra point and a chip shot field goal against K-State.

Why if only 4 or 5 plays go the other way, we would have been 11-1 and going to a Big Six Bowl. We were that close to a great season!

But that’s not the way it works. Great teams make those four or five plays. The Sooners unfortunately haven’t been a great team for several years. Was it all Trevor’s fault? How about Heupel’s play calling? Maybe it was that sieve of a defensive backfield?

No brainer right? Take the pressure off your rookie QB and run it straight down their throat with your stellar running backs and a veteran offensive line that out weighs almost all NFL units.

Nope. Not Josh Heupal. Let’s sling the ball all over the yard to the tune of 3 interceptions and a 7 point halftime deficit.

It came when fans discovered the coaching staff was making a decision doomed to fail.

Oklahoma fans are a sophisticated bunch. Sure, they don’t take into account all that a coach does.

But when Defensive Coordinator Mike Stoops stuck to his soft prevent defense and allowed Baylor to march down the field at will – enough was enough. That defensive scheme gave the game away and everyone who saw it on television (commentators included) and everyone who saw in in person in Norman knew it.
