Perine out, Mixon banged up — Iowa State on Thursday looks like a trap game to me

by

The defense bounced back very nicely against Kansas Saturday night.

I know it’s Kansas, but to hold any team under 200 yards of offense and 3 points is nothing to sneeze at.

But again, it was Kansas. So we can’t start thinking the defense is back just yet. The offense was again sharp and Westbrook is fast becoming one of the best receivers in OU history. If he keeps it up, he should at least be invited to New York for the Heisman ceremonies.

Things get serious again in a short turnaround as the Sooners travel to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones this Thursday night.

Don’t let Iowa State’s 1-7 record fool you. They have thrown up some decent games against Big 12 teams this year. They lost to Baylor at home 42-45. And stayed within a possession of the pukes in Stillwater 31-38.

Sooners wide receiver Nick Basquine honors his mom in heartfelt Twitter post

The son stepping into the footsteps of the dad. It’s such an easy sports story that it is nearly a cliche.

Certainly the story of Sterling Shepard and his late father Derrick Shepard is one such feel good narrative.

But it’s not always that way. And yet, it can be an equally inspiring story.

Such as the case of Nick Basquine.

Basquine is the son of former OU football player Anthony Stafford (on the same ’85 OU national championship team as Derrick Shepard). But, Nick doesn’t want his accomplishments on the football field to be framed by the legend of Stafford. Basquine doesn’t want Stafford mentioned every time he scores a touchdown for the Sooners this season. He does not have a relationship with his dad. He hasn’t since he was an infant.

The most important person in Basquine’s life is his mother, Mary.

Below is the Twitter post Basquine posted today. Read it. It’s an impressively eloquent and honest and mature message from a young man who honors his mom who raised him here in Norman, from Eisenhower Elementary to Norman North.

Lack of leadership on Sooners defense is embarrassing

At what point do we stop saying “Oh that’s just Big 12 offenses”, and start saying “Our defense just sucks!”

What occurred with the Sooner defense Saturday night in Lubbock was almost unimaginable.  The stats were mind boggling.  Over 850 yards of offense given up.  An astounding 59 points scored by Tech.

And maybe the most damning of stats:  The Red Raiders converted 20 of 25 third down.

That was the OKLAHOMA SOONERS defense. The home of the SELMON BROTHERS and GEORGE CUMBY.  GRANVILLE LIGGINS, ROD SHOATE and JIMBO ELROD.  RICKY DIXON, TONY.CASILLIAS and THE BOZ.  TOMMIE HARRIS, DERRICK STRAIT and BRANDON EVERAGE.  TEDDY LEHMAN, GERELD MCCOY and ROY WILLIAMS.  ROCKY CALMUS, TORRANCE MARSHALL and TONY JEFFERSON.
