Sooners end stellar season with 34-24 loss to ‘Bama in college football playoff

by

Alabama overcame a 17-point deficit late in the second quarter to shift momentum from an Oklahoma team that appeared on a verge of a blow out. The Crimson Tide then never let go, spoiling the Sooners’ first college football playoff game ever played in Norman, 34-24.

It was a mirror of the regular season game between the two blue blood programs played in Tuscaloosa on November 15, when Oklahoma capitalized on three Crimson Tide turnovers to win 23-21

But this time it was Oklahoma’s miscues that allowed Alabama to tie the game up right before the half, going on a 27-point unanswered run by the third quarter’s end, and fending off a fourth quarter surge by the Sooners.

“When we needed to, we couldn’t pull one out like we have several other games this year,” Coach Brent Venables said in his post-game press conference.

Oklahoma scored on three of its first four possessions. QB John Mateer’s athletic ability shined in an 8-yard touchdown run. Tate Sandell scored on a 51-yard field goal. Then Mateer connected with Isaiah Sategna for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter — giving the Sooners a 17-0 lead.

Defense carries Sooners to 17-6 win over Mizzou

In a game best described as a defense-dominated punting contest, the Oklahoma Sooners got their fifth win over a ranked opponent, the Missouri Tigers 17-6, and took another step toward the college football playoffs.

The win, which followed last week’s road win over then 4th ranked Alabama, improved the Sooners’ record to 9-2, and left LSU the weekend next week as the last hurdle to a first round playoff spot.

The first quarter had fans thinking last week’s win in Tuscaloosa left a hangover for the Sooners. Missouri led 3-0 and Oklahoma had negative rushing yardage.

But the Oklahoma defense shut down vaunted Mizzou running back Ahmad Hardy, holding him to a mere 57 yards, just one week after Hardy ran for 300 yards and three touchdowns against Mississippi State. Hardy entered the game was the nation’s leading rushing, averaging 130 yards per game.

Sooners take care of business, turn to Texas

by

We can talk about the Oklahoma-Kent State if you want. But this is now officially the “Red River Rivalry/Shoot/Out/Who will be the Sooners’ starting QB Week,” so is there really any need?

Yes, Oklahoma soundly whipped an undermanned Kent State team 44-0, giving the Sooners’ their first fumble recovery for a TD, first interception and first shut out for the season on a sunny day in Norman.

It didn’t take Coach Brent Venables long after the game to turn to what most fans were thinking about even before kickoff Saturday.

Oklahoma vs. Texas. The Sooners are going into this game undefeated at 5-0, something they’ve done 15 out of the last 25 years. In those games against Texas, the Sooners won 10 and lost five.

“Guys are looking forward to that challenge and the work and the preparation that’s got to go into another week,” Venables said. “The challenges of what’s sitting in front of us with Texas (is) something I know our guys will be looking for.”
