Dave: Sooners face a wounded Husker animal this week on the road in Lincoln

Oklahoma needs to be on its toes in Lincoln and dispel nagging doubts about the offense
That was the most uncomfortable 30 point win I think I have ever seen.

At least for the first half. After Kent St. spent the beginning 29 minutes of the game making OU look like….well…Kent St., the Sooners finally realized that the Golden Flashes weren’t going to roll over.

Down 3-0 with just over a minute left in the second quarter, Dillion Gabriel found Marvin Mims on a few sideline patterns and a nice streak route for a touchdown with just 18 seconds left before intermission. The Sooners then scored on their first drive of the third quarter and the route was on.

What took so long? My guess is that Lebby didn’t want to show his hand before the meat of the schedule begins.

But Kent St. had other ideas and probably forced Oklahoma to turn a few more pages in the play book in the second half, to make sure another top 10 team didn’t fall at home to a supposedly inferior opponent.

Dave: Expect speed race with Kent State

All in all it was a pretty successful debut for new Sooner head coach Brent Venables last Saturday.

They took care of UTEP in convincing if not spectacular fashion.

The offense was balanced and fast. Boy were they fast. Maybe too fast? The time of possession could be a little concerning.

The Sooners possessed the ball just 21 minutes and 27 seconds versus UTEP who held the ball 38 minutes and 33 seconds.

Of course it didn’t matter because Oklahoma was up 21-0 in the first quarter, averaging just over one minute and 10 seconds for each of those three touchdowns.

The Miners tried to control the ball, but could not convert those possessions into touchdowns. The OU defense was able to shut down UTEP outside of two 50 yard field goals and one touchdown by playing an effective zone the majority of the game.

Worry meter: Sooners start new chapter with low stress start

It certainly was a one two gut punch last November for the Oklahoma Sooners Football program.

First, the rare loss to the okie pokies, and then finding out the next day the main reason for the rare loss.

A coach who had one foot out the door, and knew that winning that game and going to the Big 12 Title
game would actually make it harder to leave.

Yes, Oklahoma’s 22nd head coach in school history decided that a move to the SEC was going to be too challenging for his taste and took off for the west coast where the easier competition would be more to his liking.

Lying through his teeth, he said that the decision to leave took place on the Sunday after the Bedlam game when he was contacted for the first time by USC about their head coaching position.

All the while his kids had been pulled out of school for several weeks prior to that Sunday. And even if he himself had not spoken to USC officials, you know his agent started speaking with them the moment Todd Helton was fired by the Trojans.
