Venables: ‘I’m pissed about all the things that happened….’

by

Last week in Lincoln the Sooners showed they could play complimentary football (a balanced offense and defense) — in a good way to beat Nebraska.

This week back in Norman they showed they could play complimentary football — in a bad way to lose to Kansas State.

Both squads bear the responsibility for failure on Owen Field on Saturday night, when the Wildcats upset No. 6 Oklahoma 41-34.

And a noticeably angry Coach Brent Venables said so in his post-game press conference.

“I am pissed about all the things that happened out there today….”

The only highlight of the game was a raucous crowd. But even some of them began to file out of the stadium with 8 minutes remaining when K-State extended their lead to 34-20 and the Sooners defense had no answer for KSU running back Deuce Vaughn (25 carries for 123 yards) and quarterback Adrian Martinez (21 carries for 148 yards).

On a third and 16 from their own 41 yard line, Martinez scrambled out of the pocket for 55 yards to seal the Sooners’ fate. The Wildcats scored two plays later, extending the lead they had maintained the entire game to 41-27 with 1:58 left.

“It broke our back at the most critical of time,” OU Coach Brent Venables said of Martinez’ play.

Let’s be honest about Gundy’s poo on Bedlam

by

The biggest pile of horse hockey to be dumped on Oklahoma this week was Mike Gundy’s poo that Bedlam is ending because the Sooners are leaving the Big 12 conference for more money.

“What’s going on now is almost a situation with a husband and a wife, or a girlfriend and a boyfriend when you know you’re dead wrong and you try to turn the table and make them think they’re wrong, when Oklahoma State has no part in this,” Gundy said.

Let’s be honest, Mike. Bedlam is ending because Gundy and his Copokes in Stillwater don’t want to face a tough opponent in their non-conference football schedule.

And Oklahoma is too tough for them.

Sure, when OU announced they were jumping ship for the Southeastern conference, some Oklahoma State muckity mucks, along with other Big 12 members were upset. They said they were deceived because OU and UT didn’t announce they were secretly planning an escape.

Imagine Andy Dufresne telling the guards in advance he was about to crawl through the sewer on his way to the Zihuatanejo beach.

A Tale of Two Halves — Sooners win 33-3

by

If the Oklahoma-Kent State game was a forecast of the Sooners’ 2022 season, we can expect the best of times and the worst of times from this team.

Their 33-3 win before flashing stadium lights on Saturday night was a tale of two halves (apologies to Charles Dickens).

The offense in the first half was flat. And that is being generous.

Perhaps we should have known the game would be surreal when earlier on Saturday the computer system relied upon by the athletic ticket office crashed and prevented half the fans from downloading their digital tickets for the game.

That error was corrected a few hours before kickoff.

The offense’s errors took a little longer — until the last minute of the second quarter, with three straight Dillion Gabriel passes to Marvin Mims — the last being a 36-yarder to give the Sooners their first score to take the 7-0 lead going into halftime.
