Dave: ‘Texas. Man, I hate those bastards’

by

In this day and age of parity in college football, it is almost impossible to win them all.

That certainly was the case for several teams last Saturday. Half the top 10 was beaten including four of the top six.

That was the only solace to be taken after the Sooners let one slip away against TCU. Don’t get me wrong. Give the Horned Frogs credit. They played about as well as they could and won fair and square.

But did OU play their “A” game? Not even close. That to me is what made the loss so frustrating. There was plenty of blame to go around. Offense, defense, and coaching. Everyone had a hand in it.

But if I was forced to pick on someone, it has to be Offensive Coordinator Josh Heupel. As bad as the defense was, they only gave up 7 points in the second half. And toward the end of the game they created turnovers and came up defensive stands to give the offense the ball several times when one score puts OU ahead. But for some reason, Josh panicked.

Texas game a good salve for our Frog-inflicted wounds

The OU guy who scheduled TCU the week before the Red River Rivalry was a genius.

After all, if TCU were to upset Oklahoma — which they did on Saturday — there probably was going to be no better a salve for those wounds than beating Texas in the Cotton Bowl the following week.

Sure, you may be thinking that an Oklahoma win this week over Texas is not a foregone conclusion. Well, it never is. Weird things happen in the Red River Rivalry. Sometimes the best team doesn’t win. See last year, for example.

Yet, I am quite sure the Sooners will beat Texas on Saturday. It will be easier to maneuver the concession lines at Fair Park than for Texas — which is 104th nationally in passing and 92nd in rushing — to move the ball gainst Oklahoma.

But, what is perhaps more troubling than thinking of the long lines for corn dogs at Fair Park, is the prospect that Oklahoma’s team is still good enough to get into the college football playoffs this year — and with further Top 10 losses expected that is very much a possibility –but the coaching may not be good enough.

Hunter’s Top 5 things to do for OU-Texas weekend

I’ll be heading to Dallas on Friday with all the rest of you Sooner fans. Here is my list of the top things every Soonerguy should do this weekend:

1. The game itself. Be one of the 90,000 fans (only 45,000 of them count, of course) that are making constant noise for 3 hours. It gives you a chance to yell bad things to other people and everyone thinks it is OK.

2. The Texas State Fair. Big Tex is big. The corn dogs are big. The fair is big. The midway rides give Texas fans something to do after their loss before they have to drive home.

3. The Drive to Dallas. There are at least 30,000 of the 45,000 Sooner fans who travel down I-35 on Friday. It’s like a massive D-Day invasion. Very cool.
