Sooner defense saves stuttering offense in 27-13 win over Iowa State

by

Midway through the third quarter the early stellar play by Oklahoma’s defense was called into question.

Iowa State converted on a 4th and 11 and then again on 4th and 12, scoring a touchdown to cut the Sooner lead to 20-13.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma offense hit a brick wall, with three drives in a row ending in three and outs.

But that’s when the defense came back to life in the fourth quarter, getting two of their three interceptions to kill any chance the Cyclones of making a homefield comeback and securing a much needed 27-13 win in Ames.

Redshirt senior safety Justin Broiles and sophomore linebacker Danny Stutsman grabbed the crucial fourth quarter interceptions.

The win moved the Sooners record to 5-3 for the season and 2-3 in Big 12 play.

It was the largest margin of victory the Sooners have had over Iowa State since 2015.

What a difference a week makes.

Or, what a difference having a quarterback makes.

Both were at play as the Sooners ended a three-game losing streak and on the heels of an embarrassing loss in the Red River Rivalry, defeated Kansas at home 52-42 under the reins of QB Dillon Gabriel, returning to duty from an injury.

“Dillon makes a big difference,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. “As we saw today, having missed him for the last seven quarters, he makes a big difference in the flow of your whole team. Not just the offense.”

Gabriel finished 29-for-42 with 403 yards and three total touchdowns and led the Sooners (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) to the win over the No. 19-ranked Jayhawks.

OU compiled 701 total yards of offense compared to just 195 total and 39 through the air against Texas.
