OU vs Texas — Stoops’ chance to regain faith of the fans

by

Bob Stoops avoided his first 1-3 start last Saturday against TCU. Just barely. The Sooners took a 25 point lead into the fourth quarter and had to hold on for dear life as the Horned Frogs scored 22 points in the last quarter against only 3 points for Oklahoma.

Are you kidding me? Is nothing going to be easy this year? Stupid question I guess. When we had to settle for a field goal our last possession giving the ball back to TCU with over two minutes left and only a 6 point lead I thought we were toast.

After watching what they did to our defense over the last quarter, I was chalking this one up as another loss.

But credit where credit is due, the defense was able to stiffen up and seal the deal. And also credit to Bob Stoops for arguing that grounding call. Probably won the game.

So it was a successful start to Big 12 play no matter how ugly. Now we are in texas week.

texas….man I hate those bastards.

Unfortunately Bob now has a texas problem. The Sooners have lost two out of the last three against the longhorns and really should have lost all three truth be told. And in all three games OU has been the favorites. In some cases very big favorites.

Sooner don’t make it easy; the blood pressure has now subsided – but oh my

by

My blood pressure has subsided now. It’s about an hour since Oklahoma held on to a 52-46 win over TCU in Fort Worth.

In a game that had to have whacked a good couple of years off the life expectancy of most Sooners fans, we learned that the OU offense can be very good (thanks to David Boren’s decision to not to kick Joe Mixon off the team a year ago) and the OU defense can be very good at times, and very bad at times (unfortunately sometimes, as Saturday, in the same game).

I had begun to prepare myself for a disappointing laying of a crimson and cream egg in the first couple of minutes of the game when Oklahoma fumbled and TCU scored and before some fans had time to find their seats the Horned Frogs were ahead 7-0.

Then in the second quarter the Sooners came storming back and took a 35-24  lead at halftime.   But not before Baker Mayfield fumbled the ball and gave TCU a field goal that could have been important later.

The third quarter was all Oklahoma, especially the defense, which held TCU to 16 yards for the quarter. The Sooners at that point went on a 42-3 run. It even included a flea flicker that resulted in a 67 yard TD pass from Mayfield to Dede Westbrook.

Let’s face the reality: We need better players and coaching for OU to come back

by

The Sooners are who they are. About a top 15 to 20 team who will compete in a weak Big 12 and might even win it with some luck.

That’s the ceiling right now. They don’t belong on the same field with the Ohio States and Alabamas of the world. That much was evident when a very young and inexperienced Buckeye team took OU to the woodshed a few Saturdays ago.

Oh some people will tell you that the Sooners just made too many mistakes and they aren’t that far off blah, blah, blah. Nope. Not gonna fall for it. Ohio St. dominated and it wasn’t close. They had by far the better team that night.

Remember when OU was unbeatable on Owen Field? Those were the days. They are who they are for now. And it’s about players and coaching. We need better players and arguably better coaching.

The better players are on the way if the 2017 recruiting class stays intact. But it will need to be followed up with great classes in 2018 and 2019 to get back to the early 2000s dominance all Sooner fans hope for.
