Defensive failures mean a would be blow out could end up a shoot out against Baylor

by

Even without Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, the Sooners were able to gut out a 10-point victory on the road against the Iowa State Cyclones.

And they have Dimitri Flowers to thank.

After not carrying the ball once this year, the versatile fullback gained 115 yards on 22 carries and added a touchdown reception for good measure.  An amazing performance that saved the Sooner’s bacon against a deceptively decent team on the road on a Thursday night.  And let’s not forget another stellar outing by Westbrook.

The defense on the other hand…I understand they only gave up 24 points, but the problems are still there.  And they aren’t going away.  The most frustrating part is that there are defensive players that are flat out not playing hard.  Several players on defense take plays off.  And some of them are seniors who should be leaders by example.

There are guys literally walking if the ball isn’t near them.  It’s an embarrassment and it’s been going on all year.  Only thing left is to hope the offense can keep out-scoring their opponents.

As such, they will need a big day against Baylor this Saturday at Owen Field.

Mixon becomes first college player to be suspended over a parking ticket – no, really

You would have thought after a year’s suspension with no issues and a no-trouble year-and-a-half of play, Joe Mixon would have earned back some good will points.

Guess not.

Star running back Mixon was suspended for the Oklahoma game on Thursday against Iowa State for doing what many of us have done in frustration: tearing up a parking ticket and throwing it on the ground.  See details of the incident here.

The heavy punishment (for “violating the student conduct code”) resulted because of who Mixon is: a football player accused of assaulting a woman before he had ever even practiced in an OU uniform in 2014 (and who was later suspended from the team for a year).

Either that or leashes are now so short in Norman that dogs better watch out.

Perine out, Mixon banged up — Iowa State on Thursday looks like a trap game to me

The defense bounced back very nicely against Kansas Saturday night.

I know it’s Kansas, but to hold any team under 200 yards of offense and 3 points is nothing to sneeze at.

But again, it was Kansas. So we can’t start thinking the defense is back just yet. The offense was again sharp and Westbrook is fast becoming one of the best receivers in OU history. If he keeps it up, he should at least be invited to New York for the Heisman ceremonies.

Things get serious again in a short turnaround as the Sooners travel to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones this Thursday night.

Don’t let Iowa State’s 1-7 record fool you. They have thrown up some decent games against Big 12 teams this year. They lost to Baylor at home 42-45. And stayed within a possession of the pukes in Stillwater 31-38.
