Sooners roll to 48-16 win in season opener

by

A strong running back presence marked the Sooners’ 48-16 steamrolling of Louisiana Tech.

Running backs Keith Ford, Alex Ross and true freshman Samaje Perine combined for five touchdowns.

Meanwhile, sophomore QB Trevor Knight threw for 253 yards and one TD in his sixth career start. He went 19-for-34 in passing with one interception.

But the running backs stole the show. Even six of Knight’s passes went to Ford, who had 65 receiving yards.

The game had most Sooners fans talking about the strength of the running back corps. All told, Ford, Ross and Perine combined 260 yards from scrimmage and Ross added an 80-yard kickoff return that set up the Sooners’ final touchdown.

Sooners pick up from where the Sooner Magic left off

It’s finally almost here. Another glorious season of Sooner football! It’s been a rough past month. But in the end, what will happen will happen and you just strap on the helmets and play ball. And that of course, is what we are all looking forward to.

But to begin with, as this is my first article since before last season’s Bedlam game, I want to offer my thoughts on how the year year wrapped up with the Bedlam Bell and Sugar Bowl trophies neatly tucked away in the trophy case.

Let’s start with the cowpukes in Stillwater. Now, I heard a lot of talk about Sooner Magic after that contest. And to be fair, it was very impressive how our boys drove the field in under two minutes to win the game with our third quarterback of the game.

But make no mistake about it. That WAS NOT Sooner Magic. That was what was supposed to happen! That was the natural order of things! That was what has happened over 80 percent of the time in a series that dates back over a hundred years! It’s what every sane poke fan knows will almost always happen!

Media reports Bell taking back up snaps in practice

by

QB turned TE Blake Bell has been splitting his time between those two positions in practice this week, because of a slight injury to redshirt freshman Cody Thomas, who is expected to back up Trevor Knight this season, The Oklahoman reported.

Bell told reporters he hadn’t taken a snap at QB since early January, the newspaper said. But in a news story by Oklahoma sports writer Jason Kersey, the media outlet stated there were multiple sources who said that was wrong. It reported that Bell’s limited quarterback repetitions only came against the second-team defense and coaches have only been using him at QB as possible insurance in case something happens to Knight.

Coach Bob Stoops said redshirt freshman Cody Thomas would likely be Knight’s primary backup. Coaches have not acknowledged Thomas’ injury, but it is not believed to be serious. He was dressed out in full pads for the open portion of Thursday’s practice, when students and media were allowed inside. Bell didn’t take any snaps at quarterback during the open portion of practice.

Texas Tech transfer sophomore Baker Mayfield is on the roster, but is not expected to win his appeal to the NCAA to allow him to avoid the one-year sit out rule. Mayfield started at Texas Tech as a true freshman.
