Tough second half Poke defense slows down Sooners, holds on to 37-33 Bedlam win

by

Oklahoma’s winning this season has been in large measure due to the stellar play of true freshman QB Caleb Williams, but experience trumped raw talent as a senior-laden Oklahoma State defense stifled Williams and the Sooners offense in the second half, holding on to a 37-33 win in Bedlam.

The loss knocks the No. 10 Sooners out of the Big 12 Championship game and eliminates them from any college football playoff consideration.

Oklahoma has won the last six Big 12 championships.

Williams was 20 of 39 passing for 252 yards and three touchdowns. And Oklahoma running back Kennedy Brooks carried for 22 runs for 139 yards.

But most of that offensive production occurred in the first half, which ended in a 24-24 tie, but with the underdog Oklahoma carrying the momentum into the locker room.

The Sooner offense was shut out in the second half.  Oklahoma only scored on a muffed punt recovery and a safety.

A tenacious defense and an offense that stumbled mid-way but righted itself turned Bedlam into a blowout as the Sooners continued their domination of the series against the Cowboys 41-13 under the prime time lights on Saturday.

It was the 90th win for Oklahoma over Oklahoma State in the 115 years the in-state rivals have played.

“We wanted to play tonight like we were the hunter and not the hunted,” Oklahoma Coach Lincoln Riley said. “We had to play aggressive. You have to go take it to beat a good team like this. And we certainly did that.”

Although the Oklahoma offense has lead the team in recent years, this Bedlam game showed an emerging defensive strength that led to the Sooners playing complimentary football in a manner long hoped for by fans.
