Sooners defense holds on to 27-21 win for Big 12 Championship

by

An anemic second half offense put the Sooners defense in the position of having to hold off an Iowa State comeback lead by scrambling and seasoned QB Brock Purdy.

And they did.

The win was sealed by the OU defense — specifically a last minute interception of a Purdy pass by cornerback Tre Brown.

And so Oklahoma won its sixth straight Big 12 Championship in a tremendous 27-21 win over Iowa State before the Covid-limited 17,827 spectators at AT&T Stadium on Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

Brown’s interception capped the game, but his important kickoff returns also factored heavily in a field position game that favored the Sooners most of the second half.

Sooner fans were on edge late in the game as Iowa State kept gaining momentum. With 5:15 left in the game it looked like the Sooners defenders might be wearing down, holding onto a narrow 3-point lead, despite a stellar pass rush led by tackle Perrion Winfrey that never gave Purdy much comfort in the pocket most of the game.

Dave: Big 12 Championship seems like a birth right for Sooners

We are coming to the end of a really strange college football season.

I don’t know how history will judge this year. Should there be an asterisk by all the records and Championships?

Should the season have counted? Should the season even have been played at all?

Should Ohio St. get into the play off after playing 5 regular season games? Hell, should they really have been allowed to play in the Big 10 Title game? Who knows?

I was of the opinion that the season should have been cancelled for the safety of all involved.

Inept defense sinks Sooners for first loss in Ames since ’60

You can point to key penalties and a late fourth quarter interception by young QB Spencer Rattler, but the Sooners lost for the first time in 60 years in Ames, Iowa because of something much simpler: tackling.

Or rather, the Sooners’ defense’s inability to do it.

Oklahoma’s 37-30 loss to Iowa State on Saturday night dropped them to 0-2 in the Big 12. It was the first back-t0-back loss for the Sooners since 1999.

The Sooners will go into the Red River Rivalry next weekend with a 1-2 record.

“Our backs are against the wall as a football team. We know that, we accept that. Our guys are hurt. Most of the guys in our room have never experienced a start of a season like this, but it’s still how you respond and I believe I know how this group will,” Coach Lincoln Riley said after the game.

Rattler played well. He threw two touchdowns (to Jeremiah Hall) and ran for another. The redshirt freshman completed 25 of 36 passes for 300 yards.
