The Belldozer story continues with huge win at Notre Dame

by

Moments after the final gun, Oklahoma center Gabe Ikard summed up the status of his teammate who lead the Sooners to their 35-21 win over Notre Dame.

“The tale of the Bell Dozer keeps growing,” Ikard said.

He was referring to quarterback Blake Bell, who shrugged off cramping muscles to return to the helm in the fourth quarter to put the end to the Irish with a strike to WR Sterling Shepard — who streaked 54 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.

Earlier, Bell, with great protection from Ikard and the rest of the offensive line, found Lacoltan “Scuba” Bester for a 26 yard touchdown to answer Notre Dame’s only first half score.

Bell finished the day by completing 22 of 30 passes, for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 62 yards against an Irish defense that stymied the Sooners last year by holding them to only 15 yards rushing the entire game.

Sooners have to fight lucky Irish officiating too

After the Tulsa game I think we can safely say that the Trevor Knight experiment, barring injury or graduation, is over.

I don’t blame the coaching staff for trying. After Johnny “Hancock” Manziel burst on the scene last year I’m sure many a coaching staff were on the look out for the next mobile waterbug to turn loose on unsuspecting defenses.

DAVES-LOGO-copyHowever after seeing Knight and Bell in action, it’s hard to believe Knight showed so much more in pre-season as to convince the coaches that he was the one over Bell. Maybe it’s true some players are great in practice but it just doesn’t click on Saturdays. And that’s not to say it wouldn’t eventually click for Knight, but after Bell’s performance, I don’t expect Knight back under center unless Bell goes down or in a special package for one or two plays

The football gurus said Blake Bell’s performance against Tulsa gave him a pass efficiency rating of 202.4.

I don’t know what the heck that means. But, I don’t need any football stat to tell me that Oklahoma has found their quarterback.

No disrespect to Trevor Knight — he’s the future (and a bright one indeed, regardless of his shaky start in the first two games of this season) — but Bell’s 27 of 37 passes for 413 yards in the air and 24 yards of effective scrambling, won him the job.

More importantly, Bell looked comfortable and leader-like in the Sooners 51-20 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

This should come as no surprise. Bell has been on Owen Field enough the last two years as the “Bell Dozer” — always in pressured situations in the red zone (remember his game-tying TD in Bedlam last year that gave the Sooners the opportunity to win in overtime?).
