Sooners take on the *real* 1945 national champion Army

by

In my previous article I opined that Iowa St. would have problems moving the ball against Oklahoma because they had lost their top two wide receivers from last year.

Well, what the hell do I know? Just insert the next 6’6’’ wide out on your roster and have a field day. Hakeem Butler ripped the Sooner secondary for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 5 catches.

To be fair it should have been more like 74 yards and no touchdowns, but that would have entailed our defensive backs being able to..what is that fancy football term again?….oh yeah..TACKLE. So hopefully they work on that in practice at some point.  Maybe stay after class a couple of days, who knows.

Outside of that glaring deficiency, the team showed poise in answering every Iowa State punch with a counter punch of their own and the offense melted away half the fourth quarter on their last drive to kick the game clinching field goal.

It was a tough, hard-fought conference win on the road. And you have to be happy about that.

This weekend at Owen Field the 1945 National Champion Army Black Knights come to town for a 6pm kickoff.

Now there are some people north of here who are under the delusion that they won the 1945 National Championship.  They may have bought a 1945 title, but they by no means won it. A few years ago, at the request of multiple schools, their words, The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) said that they would retroactively select Coaches’ Trophy winners from 1922 (when the AFCA was founded) up to 1949 (the year before the Coaches’ Poll was first published ) if a school petitions for the trophy.

Oklahoma vs. Army: If there ever was a game that the Sooners should get plenty of opportunities to tackle a runner, this one is it.

But the only school that has petitioned is Oklahoma State, for the 1945 year. Let’s look at that year. Army won the AP poll National Title trophy. Army, like OSU was undefeated. And Army was ranked number 1 in the final AP poll, a unanimous choice by all 116 AP voters. OSU ranked number 5 in the final AP poll, behind Army, Alabama, Navy and Indiana.

That year Army beat 5 ranked teams at the time they played them: No. 9 Michigan, No. 19 Duke, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 6 Penn and No. 2 Navy.  Oklahoma State beat 2 ranked teams: No.19 Tulsa and No. 7 Saint Mary’s.

So after looking at those results, of course Oklahoma State was awarded the retroactive AFCA National Title!?!? Yes folks, Boone Pickens sure has a lot of money to throw around. At least enough to buy a little bit of history for his old alma mater.

So once again Oklahoma welcomes the ACTUAL 1945 National Champions to Norman this Saturday night.

Army runs the triple option almost exclusively. They only throw the ball about 10 or 12 times a game.  But they are very well coached and don’t make mistakes. They will play hard and by no means be afraid of the Sooners.

And if there ever was a game that the Sooners should get plenty of opportunities to tackle a runner, this one is it.

However, Oklahoma just has too much depth and talent for the Black Knights to hang around much past halftime. As such the Worry Meter is only at 25% this week. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
