The Sooner defense suffered a huge setback Monday when starting LB Travis Lewis suffered a broken foot in practice. Lewis, who was expected to be the mainstay of a defense hoping to shore up weaknesses from last year, will be unable to play for up to eight weeks.
Corey Nelson will move into Lewis’ weak side linebacker position. Tony Jefferson will move to nickel back. Javon Harris will see increased time at safety.
“We’re disappointed for Travis,” Stoops said. “He has worked very hard and I know he’ll want to get back as quickly as possible.
“We’ll adapt in the meantime. We’ve recruited very well and have some excellent athletes in those positions. I’m confident that those players will perform well.”
OU Head Athletic Trainer Scott Anderson said the injury does not require surgery. He said that the treatment consists of rest and immobilization.
Lewis, a San Antonio senior, decided to delay an NFL career to play his last year of eligibility at OU. He was selected by Big 12 area media as the pre-season defensive player of the year in the conference.
