Returning Mateer stumbles, Sooners fall 23-6 to Longhorns in Red River Rivalry

Oklahoma fans who have attended many Red River Rivalries know seemingly how often game turns on turnovers, an explosive kicking game play or a big play that alters momentum. 

The 2025 version of the rivalry, in which Texas upset sixth-ranked Oklahoma 23-6, was no exception. 

The story line was about Sooners QB John Mateer returning to action a mere 17 days after having surgery on his throwing hand

John Mateer threw for 202 yards, but he also threw three interceptions in his return. Mateer completed 20 of 38 passes and said he felt fine physically. The junior transfer quarterback said he just didn’t play good enough for the Sooners (5-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference).

“The pain level was nothing. I mean there’s no excuse,” said Mateer, who was 20-of-38 passing and sacked five times. “I was ready to go physically, but mentally I just didn’t perform.”

Bad News: Hand injury sidelines Mateer

The Sooner’s season dimmed Tuesday with the news that QB John Mateer will undergo right hand surgery Wednesday that will likely sideline him for the next month.

Head coach Brent Venables said he expects Mateer, who is No. 1 on most Heisman watch lists, to return to the field at some point in the season, but when is up in the air.

Mateer sustained the injury to his throwing hand early in Saturday’s exciting win over Auburn. The fact he finished with 271 yards passing and one touchdown through the air while also rushing for a score in the fourth quarter is remarkable, considering he was playing with a fractured thumb.

“After consulting with medical experts, it became clear that surgery is the best option for John and his short- and long-term future,” the Oklahoma coach told reporters. “He’s extremely disappointed he will miss some game action but is eager to correct the issue and move forward. As he is with everything, we know he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and work to return to the field as quickly as possible.”

Masterful Mateer milks the clock, giving Sooners 24-13 finish over Michigan

With 10 minutes left in the game and Oklahoma holding a 21-13 lead, Sooners fans were on edge that previous kicking game miscues might have end up spoiling an otherwise dominating over Michigan performance by quick footed QB John Mateer and a stifling defense.

What was needed was a long drive. One that milked the clock down — perhaps ending in points to put this game away.

What was delivered was exactly that.

It was a masterful drive lead by Mateer, starting on the Oklahoma 19 yard line. Moving the ball 78 yards. And more importantly taking 8:27 off the clock.

Also, it was masterful play calling by offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle (affectionately called Coach ‘Buck by his players), who dialed up a run-based drive — assisted by some ball-control asses from Mateer — in a display of time management we have not seen on Owen Field much since air raid offenses took over the college football landscape in the 1990s.
