No excuse for most disappointing season

by

DAVE'S LOGO copyNot much to say. Given the expectations, this is the most disappointing season of OU football under Bob Stoops reign. And there is no excuse for it.

With the resources available to Stoops, this shouldn’t be happening. Three conference losses. Two of them on Owen Field. Ridiculous.

I can hear the Stoops apologists now. “Remember the Blake years and be happy with what you have.” Yeah, I remember the Blake years. And that’s why Blake was fired. I know Bob has brought a National Title. I also know it was 14 years ago. I know he has won conference titles. But the last outright conference title was 4 years ago.

So the question is how long does OU settle for 10-2, 9-3 and possibly 8-4 seasons with no chance at a National Title and the occasional shot at a conference title? Is that an acceptable return for paying a head coach over 5 million dollars a year?ncf_a_stoops_wm_300

Hopefully Bob gets things straightened out because I don’t think he is going anywhere as long as Boren is here. Stoops has become Mark Richt before our very eyes.

As far as the game against Baylor, I really could not believe what I was watching. West Virginia came after Petty on almost every play with blitzes and delays and stunts and kept him uncomfortable the whole game. That’s why the Mountaineers beat them. The perfect blueprint for Mike Stoops to follow. And I watched dumbfounded as we continually dropped back in coverage and let Petty pick us apart.

I don’t know what happened to Mike Stoops. But Saturday was mind boggling. I guess he was too scared to go after Petty for fear of the quick strike downfield. He opted for a thousand little cuts and bled to death.

I would never have thought this ten years ago, but I think Mike is in over his head. He has not shown me he can game plan and defend current Big 12 offenses since he has been back. And now that our own offense isn’t putting up 40 and 50 points like it used too over the past several years, (much less 14 points and shut out the last three quarters of the game) the losses are starting to mount.

I guess it’s like Stoops said in his presser. “It’s where we are.” Oh well. Guess Bob can relax in his castle, look at his bank account and find comfort.

The Sooners travel to Lubbock this Saturday to take on Texas Tech. Who knows what will happen? By all accounts Tech is way down this year, but of course so is OU. And in a good year crazy stuff happens to the Sooners in that stadium.

So the worry meter remains high this week at 92%. The Sooners are 17 point favorites, so on paper somebody thinks we win this game. But on paper, on the field, wherever the hell it’s played, OU is not who we thought they were going to be this year.

Which makes every game from here on out a toss up. With all that being said…BOOMER!!! – Dave
