Sooners win 66-59 in the ugliest football game of my life — exhausting

by

This was a terrible football game.

Hard to say that, considering I agree with Coach Bob Stoops that his running back Joe Mixon had a game “for the ages.”  (263 yards rushing and 114 yards receiving).

Hard to say that considering Baker Mayfield was 27 of 36 for 545 yards passing and seven touchdowns. That’s a school record.

Hard to say that considering Dede Westbrook elevated his stock to an eventual first round NFL draft pick with his 9 catch 202 yard game.

But the Sooners’ 66-59 win over Texas Tech in Lubbock on Saturday night was an embarrassing nightmare for the Oklahoma defense. Tech’s QB completed 52 of 88 passes for 734 yards and five touchdowns.

The Oklahoma defense’s initial inability to slow  Tech QB Patrick Mahomes became an inability to stop Mahomes (especially on third downs — Tech converted 20 of 25) as the game developed. By the mid-third quarter the Sooners defense was gassed. Their tackling ability was flag-football caliber. Fortunately, the Tech defense was worse.

Sooners need to score early to take fans out of game (and watch for tortillas)

The victory over Kansas State was one of the most nerve wracking games I have been to recently. We could never really put the game away until the late fourth quarter. So even though the final score did not look it, to me that was a close win.

But that’s all that matters. Now the OU roadshow travels to Lubbock this Saturday to take on pretty boy Kingsbury and his Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Same story this year for Tech. Really good offense, abysmal defense. Although West Virginia was able to virtually stop the Red Raider offense this past Saturday when they only allowed them to score 17 points in a blowout Mountaineer win on Tech’s home field. I hope Mike Stoops is watching that film to try and pick up anything new West Virginia might have thrown at Tech to shut them down.

If the OU defense can hold Tech to anywhere near 17 points, OU will run them out of the stadium.

The Red Raider defense has no hope against Baker and the boys. Even without Samaje, I would be shocked if the Sooners don’t score at least 40 points on those guys. But as we all know, crazy things happen in Lubbock. It’s a night game so the fans will have had all day to get liquored up which will only add to the hostilities.

Sooners turn to run game to demolish Texas Tech, 63-27

Lincoln Riley’s Sooner offense showed it can be whatever it wants to be.

Against Texas Tech it was a run-dominant offense, lead by Samaje Perine, who ran through Red Raider defenders for 201 yards and four touchdowns, giving No. 17 Oklahoma a 63-27 win.

There was also much hype of this game as a “grudge match”, given that Sooner QB Baker Mayfield walked off the Red Raider team and onto the Sooner team after his freshman season in Lubbock in 2013. Texas Tech blocked Mayfield from playing right away in Norman. But that made no difference to Mayfield, who calmly completed 15 of 22 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns.

“Obviously football’s an emotional game, and I used to attend there, it’s just a fact,” he said. “So there was little bit coming into it, but I had to look at it like a normal game. That’s the focus we came into it with, and that’s how we had to execute.”
