Defense must improve, or Sooners are in trouble (Where are the Selmon brothers when we need them?)

by

garys blog1_100x300Two weeks ago, after the Akron game, I said that we would have to await the Tennessee game to see if Oklahoma deserved its then No. 19 ranking. I was wrong. Not because the answer from that game was in the negative but because we didn’t really get an answer.

Now, after week-three and the game with Tulsa, we still don’t know if the Sooners are capable of playing with the big dogs. At least three questions remain.

First, what is the status of the offensive line? I think it fair to say that the O-line was pretty ineffectual against the Vols until the fourth quarter when its apparent better conditioning took over. Even then, one of the premier running backs in the country (Samaje Perine) wasn’t consistently sprung free. And, it’s not clear to what extent that’s because Lincoln Riley is still trying to learn how to use a top-rung running back in his air raid offense. Additionally, Mayfield was constantly scrambling.

Sooners use quick scores, stingy defense for win over Vols

The Sooners defense did not disappoint on Saturday, giving Tennessee QB Justin Worley fits by sacking him five times and returning his errant throw 100 yards for a touchdown, sealing a 34-10 Oklahoma win.

The Volunteers had negative rushing yards late into the third quarter before two big runs brought them into the positive.

On offense, QB Trevor Knight was 20-33 for 308 yards and one touchdown. He surpassed the 300 yard passing mark for the second time in his career. The only interception thrown was a tip drill pick late in the first half. Knight also ran for his second rushing TD of the season.

Oklahoma’s ground game was stymied somewhat by an athletic Tennessee defensive front. But, the Sooners rushed for 146 yards. Freshman RB Samaje Perine led the team with 67 yards and starting RB Keith Ford picked up 56 yards and a touchdown. Ford sustained an ankle injury late in the game and will miss the next two games.

Tennessee loaded the box early to stop the Sooner run game. That dared Knight to pass. WR Sterling Shepard had his second consecutive game of over 100 receiving yards as he picked up 109. WR Durron Neal and TE Blake Bell also had good games at receiver. Even Ford got into the reception act, with one of his catches for a a touchdown.

Strong defense gets its shutout of Louisiana-Monroe

The Sooners defense had not earned a shutout since holding Iowa State scoreless in 2010.

That changed Saturday, when Oklahoma blanked Louisiana-Monroe 34-0 on a sweltering night in Memorial Stadium in Norman.

Defensive captain Corey Nelson manned the middle of the field all night for the Sooners, recording eight tackles, one sack and two tackles for a loss.

The improvement from last year’s defense was notable. But, Nelson and his teammates maintained they have much to prove.

“We’re not satisfied at all, and I’ll make sure that the defense won’t be satisfied with this win that we got,” Nelson said. “Especially with a shutout, we have to continue to stay hungry and stay humble.”
