OU offense strong, but defense also stepped up on 45-24 win over Baylor Bears

by

Dede Westbrook failed to nab more than 100 yards receiving for the first time in seven games, but there was no slowing down the Sooners offense otherwise in their 45-24 win over Baylor. Westbrook had four catches for 88 yards for two touchdowns.

But RB Joe Mixon came off his one-game suspension for wadding up a parking ticket ran for 124 yards and a touchdown and had five catches for 63 yards.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield passed for 300 yards for the sixth time this season

But also the Oklahoma defense stepped up.

Jordan Evans picked off two Baylor passes.  The first one was the biggest, with the Sooners leading 14-0 but Baylor threatening with third and one from the Oklahoma 2-yard-line.

But Seth Russell’s pass wound up hitting Evans in the hands.

The Sooners responded with an 11-play, 91-yard touchdown drive to go up 21-0.

Evans’ two interceptions were the most by an Oklahoma linebacker since Travis Lewis also had two against Kansas State in 2008
It was the first time this season the Sooners have forced more than two turnovers and only the third time this year Oklahoma has forced more turnovers than it gave up.

Defensive failures mean a would be blow out could end up a shoot out against Baylor

Even without Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, the Sooners were able to gut out a 10-point victory on the road against the Iowa State Cyclones.

And they have Dimitri Flowers to thank.

After not carrying the ball once this year, the versatile fullback gained 115 yards on 22 carries and added a touchdown reception for good measure.  An amazing performance that saved the Sooner’s bacon against a deceptively decent team on the road on a Thursday night.  And let’s not forget another stellar outing by Westbrook.

The defense on the other hand…I understand they only gave up 24 points, but the problems are still there.  And they aren’t going away.  The most frustrating part is that there are defensive players that are flat out not playing hard.  Several players on defense take plays off.  And some of them are seniors who should be leaders by example.

There are guys literally walking if the ball isn’t near them.  It’s an embarrassment and it’s been going on all year.  Only thing left is to hope the offense can keep out-scoring their opponents.

As such, they will need a big day against Baylor this Saturday at Owen Field.
